great album
I hadn't heard a single song from this album, but I bought it on the faith of Tom Petty's past great albums. It also didn't hurt that my personal musical hero, Jeff Lynne (of ELO and the Traveling Wilburys), was once again producing Petty. I still have yet to commit any of the titles to memory, but after a single listening, I can already tell that this will be an album I will play over and over again. I thought Full Moon Fever was easily Petty's best work ever, and it probably still is, but this album is really close to that greatness. It's much better than Into The Great Wide Open, which I thought was considerably less impressive than Full Moon Fever. On Highway Companion, Petty wrote all the songs by himself. There are no co-writes with either Jeff Lynne or Petty's long time guitarist Mike Campbell. But that doesn't matter at all, because there's some really strong material on this album, and the performances and production are amazing. Oh, and on this album...Petty plays all the drums himself, in addition to contributing a lot of other instruments.
