ReviewsThis well-researched and beautifully written book presents in graphic, specific, clinical detail overwhelming evidence to resolve any ambiguity about the relationship of the borderline mother to her children. The many faces of the borderline mother are nicely differentiated and described. Dr. Lawson also provides guidelines on how to manage a relationship with a borderline mother constructively. A helpful read for all therapists who work with borderline patients., This wonderfully readable book is totally devoid of jargon and pedantry. The writing is concise and simple, although the subject is complex and weighty. With picturesque nosology, Dr. Lawson writes about the waif, hermit, queen, and witch mothers. Her unique examination of borderline mothers and how they relate to their children culminates in a discussion of what can be done for both from an interpersonal perspective. Replete with clinical vignettes, this book is entertaining as well as informative., "This wonderfully readable book is totally devoid of jargon and pedantry. Dr. Lawson offers a compelling portrait of mothers who project massive states of confusion and terror into their children. She presents a variety of mothers, including the make-believe mother, the fairy tale mother, the queen and witch mother, along with specific clinical suggestions for dealing with each type. This spellbinding contribution to the literature provides effective treatment procedures for therapists working within the spectrum of borderline phenomenology." --Joan Lachkar "Childhood lived with a borderline mother results in an unspeakable tragedy. Few of the child's developmental needs are met because the mother cannot be a parent. Consequently, the child is programmed for a lifelong struggle against failure. For over twenty years, people have shared their own agonizing stories with me, looking to my journey for a sense of hope. The compassionate understanding and professional assistance in this book are a road map out of failure." --Christina Crawford, Masked by a smile, behind the pinafore of maternal attachment, lurks a borderline mother. SynopsisThe first love in our lives is our mother. Recognizing her face, her voice, the meaning of her moods, and her facial expressions is crucial to survival. Dr. Christine Ann Lawson vividly describes how mothers who suffer from borderline personality disorder produce children who may flounder in life even as adults, futilely struggling to reach the safety of a parental harbor, unable to recognize that their borderline parent lacks a pier, or even a discernible shore. Four character profiles describe different symptom clusters that include the waif mother, the hermit mother, the queen mother, and the witch. Children of borderlines are at risk for developing this complex and devastating personality disorder themselves. Dr. Lawson's recommendations for prevention include empathic understanding of the borderline mother and early intervention with her children to ground them in reality and counteract the often dangerous effects of living with a "make-believe" mother. Some readers may recognize their mothers as well as themselves in this book. They will also find specific suggestions for creating healthier relationships. Addressing the adult children of borderlines and the therapists who work with them, Dr. Lawson shows how to care for the waif without rescuing her, to attend to the hermit without feeding her fear, to love the queen without becoming her subject, and to live with the witch without becoming her victim. • Excellent Book!

It brought up memories of my own childhood and answered some questions. I have a much better handle on what was going on which makes it easier for me to process instead of hold onto. It was put together in a way it was easy for me to understand. Highly recommend!

  • Life Changing Book

Well researched, genuine, and realistic, this enlightening book on the little known aspects of Borderline Personality Disorder as it occurs in mother figures will ring true to anyone who has grown up under the peculiar reign that the BP mother wields in her realm. Filled with anecdotal examples that will be familiar to children raised by mothers who struggle with this complex and at times hidden affliction. The Waif, Hermit, Queen, and Witch personalities are described in full. Reading this arms a child of a BPD mother with information crucial to the child's ongoing sanity. Highly recommend. Should be available everywhere as a current book, however you have to search for it and copies are expensive but well worth it. You'll want to share it with others.

  • into the rabbit hole of bpd.

I, like many ,who were raised by a parent (s) who suffer from BPD and create suffering in their children, should read this book ,as a starting point for insight about , and into this horrible disorder which plagues families, and leaves in its wake ,broken children, into broken adults, with damaged souls. this book for me , is a starting point to finding out some of those answers , that i have had questions for for many years.

  • A Must Read

This book has helped me truly understand and escape the continued "dance" of my Borderline mother. It is practical and in depth. It is easily read and has pertinent information about the disease. I feel much better about myself after reading and learning that her behaviour is her problem, not mine!

  • The Borderline is more common than we know

A wonderful insightful read. Common behavior patterns can be misconstrued, but after reading this book, it is easier to comprehend another's behavior. I learned a lot about someone I know who is undiagnosed, which now I understand the behavior patterns after reading this book. A real Godsend.

  • My personal experiences with a borderline personality mother.

The book didn't tell me what I already knew. Also it doesn't tell you how to get better from the borderline. I threw it in the trash.

  • For those with a borderline mother, or people with BPD considering parenthood

This book provides good insight into the "prototypical" typologies of a child-borderline mother relationship, and how to potentially deal with that over life's course. It gives hope to those who want to establish a healthier relationship with their borderline mother establishing boundaries, and also discusses awareness as key to ending the cycle of fostering BPD in children if one has the condition. I have BPD and where I am in life it helped me see how my disorder might affect a child if I chose to bring one into the world. Good read, very objective.
