  • The little known Gem of a Fairy Tale

There are a couple of variations on this book - 5 brothers, 7 brothers, but you are hard pressed to find this story in American Fairy book tales. Essentially, every brother has a special power. The first brother can swallow the whole sea. He then walks out, picks up fish and treasures. The schoolchildren begged him to let them go with him. They overlooked his attempts to call them back, and when he could hold the sea back in his mouth no longer, he had to let go and they were drowned. Tried and sentenced to death, he asked and was granted permission to see his mother once again. His brother's traded places with him one after another - one could withstand great heat, one had a neck that could not be chopped. Finally, the Judge said we tried, we can't execute you, you are free and they lived happily ever after. Quite an engaging story. If you collect Fairy Tales, or have small children and have run out of the standard Snow White and Three little Pigs stories, here is a fan favorite waiting to be told.

My mother read this to me when I was a child and it still brings back memories I had long forgotten. Very good condition, excellent drawings, realistic characters all with a moral to the story. What more can you ask?
