Get Yourself a College Girl (DVD, 2011)

Product Information

GET YOURSELF A COLLEGE GIRL tries so desperately to be "hip" that it resembles all those TV comedy sketches where 70-year-old Bob Hope plays a pot-smoking hippie. When it is discovered that prim-and-proper college student Terry (Mary Ann Mobley) writes suggestive folk songs in her spare time, she is expelled. Fortunately, Terry is rescued by pompous senator Hubert Morrison (Willard Waterman), who hopes to attract young voters by aligning himself with the "in crowd." This is the sort of film in which college co-eds are played by the likes of Chris Noel and Nancy Sinatra. The chief saving grace of GET YOURSELF A COLLEGE GIRL is that it preserves on celluloid such 1960s favorites as The Dave Clark Five, The Animals, The Jimmy Smith Trio and Stan Getz, not to mention such one-hit wonders as Freddie Bell and the Bell Boys.

Okay, so I'm sure this film didn't win any Oscars or anything, but it was still entertaining. Mary Ann Mobley plays a young woman working her way through college as an aspiring song writer. Chad Everett is a big city music publisher who falls in love with her. It's not exactly "War and Peace", but it's not meant to be. One of the real highlights of the movie is the music. In 1964, the British Invasion was in full swing, and "Get Yourself a College Girl" features the music of The Dave Clark Five and The Animals. Believe me, they were some of the biggest acts around. So if this sort of thing appeals to you, then get this movie.

  • Some of the Greatest Musical Acts of the Early 1960s

Let's be real. As pretty as Mary Ann Mobley is, and as fun as it is to see a pre-star Nancy Sinatra and Chad Everett, most of us are buying this for the music acts. Because the plot is insipid if amusing. The movie's pre-MTV music videos include The Dave Clark Five in a couple of mediocre songs; The Animals in one on-character performance and one dud; decent performances from The Standells and the jazz-based Jimmy Smith Trio, plus some "we didn't quite make it" acts that are amusing as heck. But, the absolute stand-out is a performance of "Girl from Ipanema" by Stan Getz's group and Astrud Giliberto (and if anyone wants to believe that they were not yet having an affair, get a load of Getz's leering as she walks on stage). A rare chance to listen to the Getz small group go through the song with the vibes, a bit different from the usual Verve recording. Stan doesn't change his solo much but it's still great to see and hear him at the same time, plus the chemistry is wonderful. Well worth the price to experience these rare filmed performances of proto-rock and mature post-war jazz.
