Product Information

Get a lens that will deliver the close-up shots you want with the Konica Minolta Hexanon AR 40-millimeter F/1.8 AR lens. AR stands for Auto-Reflex, which refers to a series of 35-millimeter SLR cameras that Konica started building in 1965. It boasts a 40-millimeter focal length a 56-degree angle of view. That allows these Hexanon lenses to work as both long standard and short telephoto lenses. Coupled with the right camera, this lightweight and simply constructed lens will have a great addition to your kit.Konica originally designed this gear for a camera requiring a small aperture of 22. It is a fully automated AE aperture. The 40-millimeeter size of this Konica is a perfect compromise between a standard 50-millimeter and a wide-angle lens. The Konica Minolta Hexanon 40-millimeter lens is a pancake lens, which is ideal for a mirrorless camera. Pancake lenses are thin, flat camera lenses that are also known as short barrel lenses because they're shorter than they are wide. They are, therefore, also lighter in weight. Their squat design also makes for a compact camera and film accessory that can fit easily in a jacket pocket. That makes it particularly great for travel photography. While slightly larger than most pancakes, this one is unique in being able to offer an f-stop of f/1.8.Built with six elements in five groups, including one aspherical element, you can have all the flexibility you need. It features a manual focus mechanism with a wide attached focus ring. The unit itself is made of a solid, sturdy combination of metal and plastic, while the focus ring is rubberized. The aperture ring on this Konica Hexanon 40-millimeter pancake lens has six blades that are slightly curved. Just beyond the f/22 stop, this ring automatically locks. The maximum reproduction ratio it provides is 1:7. Its length at infinity is 1 1/6 inch. Its weight is just shy of 5 ounces. It includes a 55 mm round screw-in hood. These Konica Hexanon lenses have a metal body and include a 55-millimeter metal filter.Perfect for nature photography, this lens features a minimum focusing distance of just 0.45 and a magnification ratio of 1:7. This gives you the ability to orchestrate the shots you want with sensationally clear, sharp, and stunning images. It boasts nearly no distortion on your images either, offering crystalline center, corner, and partway sharpness. The sharpness continues to increase at infinity and close distances alike with the higher the f-stop. This makes these units great whether shooting long-distance landscape or close-up subjects. Contrast, bokeh, and color rendition are also impressive with this unit. With the right mount adapter, you can use the Konica Minolta Hexanon 40-millimeter on full frame or 35-millimeter SLR or DSLR cameras. These include the Sony Nex line, the Pentax K, and the Canon FD. They also include cameras from popular manufacturers like Nikon and Olympus. The flange distance of the included mount is uniquely short, adding to the compactness of this unit.

  • Not near mint as advertised but in damn good shape.

The lens doesn't appear to have any damage to the exterior save for some wear and tear on dials and cap, etc., and the rear and front lens portions seem to be in good shape. As for the lens performance itself, it takes sharp but dreamy quality photos with natural light, even heavily overcasted weather. Inside with artificial lighting, the image looses that dreamy tone some but still produces a wonderful and aesthetically pleasing effect. I use Gobe's AR-E adapter and it works wonderfully on my Sony E-mount mirrorless cameras. Because its focal length is a bit short at 40mm, I appreciate and use the lens more on my full-framed Sony A7III than on my cropped APS-C Sony A6500. With the crop conversion we're looking at a 60mm image, which doesn't fair for my needs outdoors so well.

  • Disapointed

First off the lens, as described, near mint. beautiful looking, well built, lens. Focus ring is smooth as butter. But the thing is soft soft soft. Terrible in low light which is why ya want f1.8. Bokey not so good either. I know what am doing and can not get good results, even got a quality adaptor for Olympus E M10. I have much cheaper vintage lenses where I can create art with the limitations, but have not been able to do so here. However I tried uping the sharpness and contrast in-camera before shooting and did help. I just, so far, can not find a unique charactoristic about this Konica 40mm (80 on OLY). Am disapointed because Konica is known for some of the sharpest glass out there. But then again this might just be a mis-match with micro 4/3, and would shine on a full frame sensor. Like I said is a gorgeous almost pankake lens, well built, focus ring smoooooth. Below is a shot taken, but had to use in-camera HDR to get useful, again sharpness and contrast also upped a notch.

  • Good glass with metal

I used the Konica half frame camera in the old days. I have the AR 50mm f1.4 now. This is the second AR lens I purchased. It produces very sharp pictures as all Konica AR lenses. I am very happy with it used on my a6000 camera. Why they don't make the lens used metal liked this? Instead, they all use plastic and charge a lot of money for the lens.

  • Solid value lens

I use this lens on my Fujifilm X-E1 and X-A1 bodies. It is a solid performer, well built, fast (f1.8) when you need it, nice rendering. Prices are low because Konica made zillions of these way back when. The lens performs way above it's price level.

  • Nice focal length

40mm is a good GP focal length - slightly wide normal.

  • Sharpest vintage 50mm lens!

It lives up to its reputation. Eye-ball slicing sharpness. Konica lenses are known for their resolution. The f/1.7 is their sharpest, better than the 52mm f/1.8 and 50mm f/1.8. A best buy value too. If you shoot mirror-less, you owe it to yourself to try one of these great prime lenses.
