  • Real men ignore instructions!

Like many men, I choose to ignore the leaflet giving instructions although I did read it. So I never protected the skin around the warts, nor did I put down protection on surfaces around the 'treatment' area. As you use water, the solution is obviously watery, and runs in the lines and creases of your skin. As, initially it is colourless, I didn't see it, nor worry over any trickles I did spot. I put on large drops, after allowing the tip to have plenty of time to activate the compound, maybe too much so. As I had several warts to treat, yet I never allowed it to dry before treating others. Being water, not solvent based it takes a time to dry, if you put on the amount I did. Results were massive black stains, immoveable over my arms and legs, and worse still on my stomach, which never had warts but was smeared there from other treated un-dry areas. As the skin discolouration takes a while to been noticed, it was only the stinging sensation on my stomach that alerted me to it at first. On some large warts I had put on so much, that an intense burning was felt, and, the skin around the area went black, the next day the warts, (flat warts) oozed pus, and the whole area was unsightly so I had to wear long trousers and a long sleeve shirt, despite it being Summer. Tried bleach to remove the black, yet nothing worked, and the temptation to pick off the black bits was too much and so some were scratched off too soon, leaving the wart but blooded skin. Those left for a week of so, were cured, yet the ones I had placed huge amounts of the compound on, stayed black and I picked them off, leaving deep 3 or 4 mm holes in my leg. As I have so many flat warts, I have no decided to try another internet remedy, of taking Zinc Sulphate tablets, in the hope that they will go over a three month course. Only been taken them for three weeks so far, and no sign that any have changed apart from those removed with the silver nitrate pencil. Also, am applying Zinc Oxide cream, in the hope that, 'belt and braces' may do the trick. If it fails, I will try the silver nitrate pencil treatment again, in the Winter, so I don't have to walk around covered up. If you are black, no problem I would imagine, but being white, it looks so unsightly. The good is, It worked for me in one, albeit over applied, application on almost all the warts. The bad is, the staining of skin, the 'thinness' of the solution meaning it runs in every crack and line in the skin, causing to me, large discolouration, but I did NOT do as instruction say, so my fault. Also the floor and worktop is now stained forever in black splashes so you must take care when using, or in my case mis-using this product. Still, it is only Women and elderly people who do what the instructions say first time, isn't it? PS, as the pencil wore down, the tip fell out, I picked it up, and my finger and thumb is black as I type, DESPITE washing it off almost straight away.

  • I wish I had listened to the other reviews

I read the other reviews that talked about the tip breaking. I watched the how-to-use videos that are distributed by the manufacturer. I did everything right! But the tip broke off on the 2nd use anyway. I started to try to salvage the bit of silver nitrate that was left with a set of tweezers. Huge mess! Every little fleck will stain. Even if you don't feel or see the spec, it's there. Thousands of black specs. And who would use this stuff on common warts (of the hand)? The black spots would scare people! Battling warts is hard enough! I certainly will never know if silver nitrate actually works to get rid of warts, because I wasn't able to get enough uses out of this stick. Here's some advice...go to the doctor and get Cantharidin treatment. It may take 3 visits (and a little pain) and roughly $600, but it actually works.

  • Easty to use and good value

After reading all the reviews both good and bad I decided to give it a go. I found it very easy to use and had no trouble at all. The surrounding skin did not turn black and the tip is still not broken. I just dipped the tip in a drop of water that was on the sink and left it for a few seconds before applying it to the area that needed treatment. All good

  • Potential to work, but flimsy

I have still got high hopes for this product, but the problem of its flimsiness has ensured an unsatisfactory review. I think it has the potential to work still, and it's still produced black areas of skin on the verrucas I was treating. The issue is how to dry the tip safely to ensure that the water needed to activate the product doesn't remain on it, and cause it to become like a stalactite and break off! This has meant I've only been able to do two full days of treatment as the tip broke off on the third.

  • Effective but fragile

Only got to use this once. Used it on my hands and the warts turned black. My first problem is you have to sand the dead skin off causing healthy skin to be damaged. Worst though is while drying the pen as instructed it snapped under the smallest amount of pressure. Complete waste of money.

  • read read and re-read instructions

it defo turns the skin a dark brown colour so don't let it drop. I was treating several sites at once and assumed I had to keep the tip moist but this caused it to dissolve and break the tip off you need to be 100% on it before you start. I got 3 days use out of it by salvaging the tip and it has made a difference. I'll prob buy another one and finish off the job

  • Good stuff

I've tried for about 2 years to get rid of a bloody verruca under the ball of my foot, banana skin, cider apple juice etc, I'd nearly give up hope and decided to try Silver nitrate, I did three or four treatments and three weeks later it's dead, just takes about two weeks longer to shave away the dead black skin which the nitrate kills off, well pleased with this item, don't hesitate give it try.

  • Caustic pencil

The best way to get rid of verrucas or walls. Although you have to be careful where you apply it has you leave a black mark where ever the pencil touches your skin. But eventually the black mark comes away a bit like a scab. Also it’s best to dry the pencil with tissue paper after you’ve used it otherwise it will keep dissolving if it is left wet.

  • A great little silver nitrate product.

As a nurse, I have used silver nitrate products many times. I've always had great results with it. This little pen is also a really handy tool which I've also had great results with.
