Garmin Drive 53 w/Traffic works great without a cell phone
I'm one of those people who don't use a smart phone anymore, although I have managed fleets of them in the past during my IT career. I wanted a device with live traffic updates that did not require a cellular connection. The screen is smallish but bright, clear, and uncluttered with unnecessary info. The plus side is my compact car has a small dash and no flat surfaces so anything larger would not fit as well. I have no trouble reading it at a glance, day or night. For updates you must connect via provided USB cable to a Windows or Mac and install Garmin's Drive Express software.
