One trick pony
This collection makes it clear that Mountain’s first album release, despite its technical and production shortcomings (excessive compression, smeared cymbals and heavy-handed “everything-loud-and-in-your-face-all-the-time” 1970’s sturm-und-drung production mentality) was probably the best representation of the group’s talents. The subsequent albums were unsuccessful attempts to cash in on the group’s hit “Mississippi Queen” by regurgitating the same song, or variations, on nearly every recording. The song and the first album were the high point of Mountain’s career and, as confirmed by the 2nd, 3rd and 4th albums, something of a fluke. What followed it couldn’t resurrect the initial album’s one-time shot at fame. Rated “A” for first-time effort, “D” for engineering/production, and “F” for follow through.
