Synopsis
Situated on the Back River, a tributary of South Carolina's historic Cooper River, Medway Plantation remains much as it was three centuries ago. Through photographs, interviews, letters, plantation records and diaries, this book offers a rare and intimate look at life on a private plantation. The one voice that permeates Medway's story more than any other is that of Gertrude Sanford Legendre. Her attachment to the land and animals and her passion for improving society have been the most powerful force behind Medway's preservation, culminating in her 1991 donation of permanent conservation easements on the plantation, a final act of stability in a century of precipitous change.
