Reviews
"This is an important book for those interested in Pagan Studies because it rehabilitates ancient Greek ideas about the gods as valid and able to exist alongside the allegedly more sophisticated readings that were proposed by philosophers from the sixth century BCE onwards. Plato's Gods , though a short study, requires tenacity and concentration on the part of those not trained in ancient philosophy, but is a worthwhile object of study." - Carole M. Cusack, University of Sydney

Synopsis
This book presents a comprehensive study into Plato's theological doctrines, offering an important re-valuation of the status of Plato's gods and the relation between metaphysics and theology according to Plato. Starting from an examination of Plato's views of religion and the relation between religion and morality, Gerd Van Riel investigates Plato's innovative ways of speaking about the gods. This book is invaluable to readers interested in philosophical theology and intellectual history., Plato moulded the entire tradition of philosophical theology. This book presents a comprehensive study into Plato's theological doctrines, offering an important explanation of the entire Platonic 'system' and Plato's innovations in the field of philosophical theology.Gerd van Riel expounds Plato's views of the gods and the aims of his theology to purify the image of the gods, who must be seen as completely virtuous and with the intention to make men morally better. Plato's establishment of a new theological framework consists largely in an interiorisation of religion as opposed to the civic religion of his time, but his attitude also reveals a determined view on the social and political role of religious practice, and on the interrelation between moral values and religion. Examining Plato's speculative theology - his account of divine beings, of the divine order of the universe, of divine providence, and of the monotheistic tendencies governing his view - Gerd van Riel reveals how this Platonic speculative theology oscillates between cosmic religion and a clear emphasis on the transcendence of the divine.Plato's account of the gods can be seen as a theology of transition, built on a tension between civic and individual religion, between transcendence and immanence, between polytheism and monotheism, and between the gods of tradition and the new, morally excellent but rather impersonal divine beings. Plato's Gods explores the major questions raised by philosophical theology, from its very beginning, and paves the way for understanding later thinkers whose thought can be seen as a particular solution of the same dilemmas that dominated Plato's views. This book will be of interest to all those studying or interested in philosophical theology and intellectual history., This book presents a comprehensive study into Plato's theological doctrines, offering an important re-valuation of the status of Plato's gods and the relation between metaphysics and theology according to Plato. Starting from an examination of Plato's views of religion and the relation between religion and morality, Gerd Van Riel investigates Plato's innovative ways of speaking about the gods. This theology displays a number of diverging tendencies - viewing the gods as perfect moral actors, as cosmological principles or as celestial bodies whilst remaining true to traditional anthropomorphic representations. Plato's views are shown to be unified by the emphasis on the goodness of the gods in both their cosmological and their moral functions. Van Riel shows that recent interpretations of Plato's theology are thoroughly metaphysical, starting from aristotelian patterns. A new reading of the basic texts leads to the conclusion that in Plato the gods aren't metaphysical principles but souls who transmit the metaphysical order to sensible reality. The metaphysical principles play the role of a fated order to which the gods have to comply. This book will be invaluable to readers interested in philosophical theology and intellectual history.

- e***u (283)- Bewertung vom Käufer.Letzter MonatBestätigter KaufThe listing was for a hardcover version of this book; however, I received a paperback. The Seller replied quickly to my question about this issue and issued a full refund - and let me keep the book. So, a diligent Seller for sure - and well packaged and reasonable timing on shipping. Thank you for the refund, and as you suggested, I'll likely donate this volume and seek the hardcover.
- e***n (392)- Bewertung vom Käufer.Letzte 6 MonateBestätigter KaufGreat transaction, exactly as described, packed well, and promptly shipped on August 6th. Unfortunately the U.S. Postal Service took 23 calendar days to deliver the book. It was shipped from Pennsylvania, to Atlanta, past Alabama to Texas, enjoyed several days in Texas, then to Minneapolis, Jacksonville, Florida, back to Atlanta, finally to Birmingham, and Huntsville. The seller was very responsive and I decided it was interesting to see if/how the book would arrive. Thanks, Joe
