Ridiculousness beyond imagining
Awful flick. Bad writing, acting, and cinematography. Storyline implausible, lighting bad, a low-res, low-energy production. Many of the shots were grainy closeups where you couldn't even tell what was being shown. An elbow? Part of a leg? And in very low light! I really thought that any film that had a storyline like that, and which included Selena Gomez and Vanessa Hudgens and some topless scenes would be worth the money, but they screwed it up as bad as one could. And I did NOT like James Franco's steel teeth or the ridiculousness of the girls turning into murderers and somehow killing every one of the "soldiers" in the heavily-armed fortress of a big-time rival drug dealer, while wearing bikinis, ski masks, and not carrying any extra ammo despite firing off more than a hundred bullets (by my estimate). Harmony Korine's Criminal Vacation Trip
A sultry crime caper with mesmerizing visuals. Harmony Korine's Spring Breakers (2012) is a feast for the eyes. It features endless hedonism, partying, debauchery, robbery, gunfights, and nudity so much so that your mind is fried by the end of Spring Breakers. Korine portrays the lust and insanity of teenage girls hellbent on having a good time. He certainly lives up to the intense and shocking sequences we've come to expect from Korine, but he goes further. Harmony Korine satirizes the millennial generation's nihilism, hedonism, and pleasure seeking with a parable demonstrated through the blistering violent set pieces in Spring Breakers. You will think twice before partying to the limits of decency or messing with girls like these again. Korine's direction is more appealing and accessible than ever before. Harmony Korine polished off his edges from Kids and Gummo to make a modern Scarface with teenage girls. He even references Scarface directly in the dialogue, while recreating that film's finale shootout for Spring Breaker's ending climax. Films that may have influenced Spring Breakers include: Scarface, Drive, Risky Business, or Hanna. Any number of films feel like Spring Breakers influenced them. From Thoroughbreds to American Animals, Spring Breakers has made its mark in cinematic history. Skrillex and Cliff Martinez' score for Spring Breakers feels exhilarating and mind numbing. He captures the ceaseless partying and sexual freedom teenagers crave during Spring Break. The music takes on a life of its own as Spring Breakers peaks with the raunchy and boisterous parties to the quieting ending. I adored Harmony Korine's color choices for Spring Breakers. Everything in Florida is bright neon pink, blue, or green. The seedy nature of Florida is explored through bikinis, shorts, and nudity. The lighting makes everyone glow even through all the violence and chaos. The resulting impression is that Spring Breakers is chaos captured in a bottle of a breezy 93 minutes. Benoit Debie's cinematography is stunning with stellar landscapes of urban Florida and suburban Florida. The nighttime is enchanting and luring with a darkness and riveting brightness simultaneously. The filthy Floridian populace looks nightmarish, while appealing on a neon lush surface level. Finally, the acting in Spring Breakers is mind blowing. Selena Gomez is the sweet faith driven Faith, who bites off more than she can chew. Vanessa Hudgens is sultry, wild, fierce as Candy. Ashley Benson is gorgeous and dangerous as the fearsome Brit. Rachel Korine is stunning and surreal as the depressed and lonesome Cotty. Notably, James Franco undergoes a massive visual transformation into a Riff Raff akin rapper criminal named Alien. He is hilarious, sleazy, and unsettling at all times Franco is on screen. Lastly, Gucci Mane makes his acting debut in Spring Breakers as the terrifying and intimidating Archie. In all, Spring Breakers is an art house heist and vacation film from the visionary Harmony Korine.
