  • Fantomas - Fantomas (Amenaza Al Mundo)

On paper a metal band featuring Mike Patton (Faith No More, Mr Bungle), Dave Lombardo (Slayer), Trevor Dunn (Mr Bungle) and Buzz Osbourne (Melvins) should be a hard hitting but interesting take on heavy metal most fans of their main bands should love. Right? Wrong, very wrong. This band is insane, seriously weird stuff written and arranged by Mike Patton in the dying days of FNM back in 98'. Huge riffs and pounding drums, virtuoso bass lines and every kind of vocal tic you could imagine, this album has it all. Except a linear structure, or lyrics, or even songs. This is heavy metal, but avant garde Mike Patton heavy metal. As such, it's definitely polarizing and could be unlistenable for some people. For more adventurous fans of heavy music it's a great listen, best heard as a whole rather than individual tracks. There is good stuff here, it just comes in fits and bursts. While I recommend this album, the second Fantomas album (The Director's Cut) is much easier to listen to as a primer for the rest of Fantomas' catalogue. If you give it a chance this band will grow on you.
