A book with both historic and practical value
It's a great overview of the AI field in mid-80s. It's written by one of the disciples of Marvin Minsky who went on to become the director of MIT AI lab. The practical value lies in the fact that a lot of the ideas described are relatively simple to implement at small scale and can be very helpful in many areas even today (from game development to managing business logic).
