      Penny Dreadful: Season One and Two

      These are the first two seasons of Penny Dreadful. (The third final season hasn't been released as of this writing on DVD.) The title refers to the cheap, pulp, melodramatic and sensational publications of the Victoria era. The conceit of the series is to take famous characters from Victorian fiction and intertwine them in new stories. Much of the actions relate to a central female character, Vanessa Ives, and both the heavenly and more often satanic influences upon her. We meet such characters as Dracula, MIna, Lucy, and Renfield from Bram Stoker's Dracula. We meet Dorian Grey from Dorian Gray. We meet Victor Frankenstein and at least three of his creations from Frankenstein. We meet Dr. Henry Jekyll from Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Although there's method to the madness, it's as though ...

      best show... so sad it ended

      i got into the show late. I was told by a friend to watch it... I went back and watched from season 1 and onto season 3 . only to have the show end!!! grr.. anways this show is so amazing! it talks about the classic horror figures we love. Frankenstein, vampires, monsters, werewolves, witches! it's so well written and the main character of Vanessa is brilliant!. the cd's come in the box set. but the season one season set, was damnged some how. it looks like may have been wet at some point, I did buy it new, still in the wrapping. but it seems as if water got in or something happen in handling . the disc all work fine throught! great price for the two seasons!

      A dark dark view

      This production holds absolutely nothing back. Nothing at all seems to be sacred, sexually or otherwise. The acting is superb. I would have been offended but, like the human being that I am, I found that I could not turn away. I had to see what happened next. And, this extreme darkness is laced with occasional philosophical insight, coming from, of all the possible sources, Frankenstein's Monster. There is, after all, a purposeful question here, if one can dig beneath the depictions of blood and evil in Victorian England. What is it really, to be human? Who or what are we?

      Great for nostaligic horror buffs

      I've loved how this show brings together the old horror movie characters and does such a great job with writing the show and enter twining the characters. I'm a vintage horror person so this has been right up my alley.
