Never a Dull Moment for Top Nazi Henchmen!
Reinhard Heydrich....whudda piece of work he was, the "Butcher of Prague". This flick isn't the first on the British trained commando unit that parachuted into Heydrich's realm to wack him. I had another flick on VHS about the hit that wasn't nearly as involved as this DVD. Was the assassination worth it though? The Nazi SS erased an entire town & all it's men, women, and children over the assassination. At the end of the war only one young girl, from that town, was found alive in a concentration camp. Reichsfuhrer Himmler actually had the plug pulled on Heydrich rather than see him permanently disabled from having horse hairs (car seat stuffing) blown into Heydrich's spleen from the grenade exploding in the back seat. This DVD zooms in on the hole blown through Heydrich's seat causing the serious (fatal) injury. The facial expression Heydrich's actor gives after the commandos all run off was a precious "Oh crap! I'm messed up!!"...It doesn't go on to show him being loaded onto the back of a delivery wagon & sent to the hospital as the VHS flick showed. Heydrich was to be Fuhrer upon Hitler's passing. This pissed off Himmler & probably had something to do with the plug being pulled. Gruppenfuhrer Heydrich was given the grandest Nazi State funeral, as big as JFK's was, with his closed coffin loaded onto a black gun carraige and paraded through Prague with his widow looking seriously creepy covered in black walking behind it. Heydrich's young son gave an eulogy which had all the top Nazi dogs in tears, but none of this is in the DVD. His grave site in a Berlin memorial park had the headstone removed after the war but Neo-Nazis & the like continue to place fresh flowers upon it all year round. Heydrich was a real bad-ass, but became too full of himself as many Nazi officers were. Feeling late for whatever he had his driver speed up & away from his armed guard leaving him open for attack when he reached the turn and slowed down. This, too, didn't sit pretty with Himmler when he heard of it. When the one fool with knowledge of the commandos cracked under the pressure & gave up the location of the commandos all hiding in the church, a hell of a gunfight ensued with all the commandos eventually being shot or committing suicide. The bullet holes around the basement window of the church can still be seen today as a memorial to the mission that took-out Hitler's 3rd in command. Infamous quote: "I, for one, will not miss them." -Heydrich, after drawing up the plans to mechanically kill-off the Jews of Europe. He, and Adolph Eichman, were responsible for "The Final Solution". It's truly scary to imagine Europe, and the world for that manner, had those zany arrogant Nazis won the European Theater of WWII.
