Reviews
"Shining, haunting, mind-blowing tales . . . this collection is a pure marvel. Chiang is so exhilarating so original so stylish he just leaves you speechless. I always suggest a person read at least 52 books a year for proper mental functioning but if you only have time for one, be at peace: you found it." --Junot Díaz (author of  The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao ) "Meticulously pieced together, utterly thought through, Chiang's stories emerge slowly . . . but with the perfection of slow-growing crystal." --Lev Grossman, Best of the Decade: Science Fiction and Fantasy, Techland.com "United by a humane intelligence that speaks very directly to the reader, and makes us experience each story with immediacy and Chiang's calm passion." --China Mieville,  The Guardian "Ted is a national treasure . . . each of those stories is a goddamned jewel." --Cory Doctorow, BoingBoing "Confirms that blending science and fine art at this length can produce touching works, tales as intimate as our own blood cells, with the structural strength of just-discovered industrial alloys." -- Seattle Times "Chiang derides lazy thinking, weasels it out of its hiding place, and leaves it cowering." -- Washington Post "Essential. You won't know SF if you don't read Ted Chiang." --Greg Bear "Chiang writes seldom, but his almost unfathomably wonderful stories tick away with the precision of a Swiss watch--and explode in your awareness with shocking, devastating force." -- Kirkus Reviews  (Starred Review) "The first must-read SF book of the year." -- Publishers Weekly  (Starred Review) "He puts the science back in science fiction--brilliantly." -- Booklist  (Starred Review)

Great transaction, exactly as described, packed well, and promptly shipped on August 6th. Unfortunately the U.S. Postal Service took 23 calendar days to deliver the book. It was shipped from Pennsylvania, to Atlanta, past Alabama to Texas, enjoyed several days in Texas, then to Minneapolis, Jacksonville, Florida, back to Atlanta, finally to Birmingham, and Huntsville. The seller was very responsive and I decided it was interesting to see if/how the book would arrive. Thanks, Joe

Excellent purchase. Was able to get all three items from the one seller. Seller was able to bundle all three items together into one package. Items as described and arrived in perfect condition. Good communication around shipping and tracking as items delayed and not able to be delivered by original estimate. Thanks to shipping updates I was able to track the items arriving before the extended delivery time. Thank you for making these items available on EBay.

  • Not just a "trip" but an itinerary

Ted Chiang is a highly-skilled writer who chooses speculative ideas and makes them work. Most people know him for the title story, which launched the movie Arrival (a rather misleading version of the story), but the first story in the book was even more interesting -- and subtle. The naming of his protagonist/narrator was an homage to a teacher who lived long ago; the story gives clues to how "the Force" (aka nature) actually works. I ordered two used copies of the book because people who borrow it don't always bring it back. THAT's the review, not anything I say.

  • A Great Collection of Stories

A collection of short stories and novellas that make you think about life in ways I never expected. Really diverse premises and conclusions. It includes the "Stories of Your Life" upon which Arrival is based and the movie is very true to the themes and perspectives of the story you can read here. In all very clever and an easy and compelling read all the way through.

  • Good Reading

Ted Chaing is one of the crop of relatively newer writers whose style is tinged with Ray Bradbury's palette of colors in which bizarre phenomena is prosaic. Stories of Your Life is full of these types of stories. "Hell is the Absence of God" is one of these stories in which angels routinely visit the earth. Their arrival ripples through the environment with destructive force. The story contemplates God's destructive nature and the main character's struggle with reason, rather than faith, as reason and logic are meaningless in this particular world.

  • Early writings without much substance

This book is somewhat disappointing. The stories are not written with the same level of creativity, surprise, and depth as the more recent compilation of stories in Exhalation. While interesting to see where the author began his writings, they do not compare favorably with his more recent contributions.

  • Super book!

Ted Chiang is an awesome writer. Even Samuel Delany says so! And "The Story of your Life," besides being a wonderful story, made a very impressive movie, called "Arrival."
