Vanishing Grace explores how Christians live in the middle of hostility and rejection today. Philip Yancey delves into the reasons for the hostility and gives us models of different, more effective ways to communicate the Good News. Yancey ultimately asks if the Gospel is Good News after all., Christians have proclaimed the good news about Jesus for centuries. But the good news isn't sounding so good these days, at least to some. More and more surveys show that people view Christians as bearers of bad news, judgment, and intolerance. In Vanishing Grace, bestselling author Philip Yancey acknowledges the problem and then explores how we can respond with both grace and truth. He offers a discerning look at what contributes to a hostility toward Christians, and identifies three groups--pilgrims, artists, and activists--who can show us a different way. With a reporter's eye and a compassionate heart, Yancey suggests practical ways in which we can live as salt and light within a society that is radically changing. What can we learn from those who shun church but consider themselves spiritual? Can the good news, once spoiled, ever sound good again? Philip Yancey has been asking this all his life as a journalist.     The book arrived swiftly packaged in a protective plastic envelope, but it was a paperback not hardcover as listed. I contacted seller and they apologized, refunded me and suggested several things to do with the book after allowing me to keep it. I have gone ahead and ordered a hardcover from the same seller.     THE News is still Good

    Typical Yancey: keenly aware of himself as an author, the foibles of the west, and his potential audience. Well-researched; neatly organized; both compassionate and sensible. This books aptly examines a notable pitfall in American evangelicalism, its often confrontational nature and its inconsistent servitude. With a nod to the works of mainline Christianity that should rightfully befall true conversion, Yancey identifies an over-reaction that unfortunately cripples such the ministries of the western church, its judgmentalism. He is able to broach sides divided on controversial topics. He offers necessary challenges and inspiring stories. His theology is well-rounded, yet considerate of other cultural nuances.
