Experimental and Prototype U.S. Air Force Jet Fighters examines the development of fighter airframes and engines since the end of World War II. The book covers each design that reached the hardware development stage and received an "XF" or "YF" designation from the Air Force., The United States Air Force was late in developing a jet fighter, definitely behind Germany and the United Kingdom. Nevertheless, a small number of Lockheed P-80 Shooting Stars did make it to the European and Mediterranean theaters of operations before VE Day, although they did not see combat. After the war, the sheer size of the U.S. aviation industry guaranteed that American fighters would soon dominate the skies. However, the state of the art was advancing so fast that many development efforts never resulted in production aircraft; concepts that had seemed reasonable, even ideal, at the time were quickly overcome by newer and better technology. In the United States alone, several dozen different fighter designs made it to the prototype stage during the 1950s and 1960s. In this book, Dennis R. Jenkins and Tony R. Landis look at the variety of different jet-fighter concepts developed by the U.S. Air Force after World War II. These pages cover all experimental and prototype jet fighters that made it to the hardware stage - design studies and "paper airplanes" are not discussed since other current books are dedicated to those subjects. The rationale for developing each aircraft is covered, along with a discussion of the technology needed to build it, its flight-test program, and the reasons it was cancelled or ordered into production. The text is derived mostly from official Air Force documents, and all of the aircraft are well covered photographically, usually with seldom-seen images showing them as they appeared during their flight-test program., Experimental and Prototype U.S. Air Force Jet Fighters examines the development of fighter airframes and engines since the end of World War II. The book covers each design that reached the hardware development stage and received an XF or YF designation from the Air Force. Sometimes the airframe/engine combination worked, as it did in the North American F-86 Sabre. Other times, technology failed, as it did in the Convair XP-92 ducted-rocket interceptor. In addition to the changing aerodynamic technologies, the evolution of offensive weapons for each evolution of fighter is also reviewed. Much of the data used in the book came from previously classified Air Force program documents. Dozens of never-before-seen photos highlight this review of Air Force fighter aircraft.

    This item was listed as "very good" condition but it should have been listed as "like new" condition. I was very pleased to find the Bible had no writing in it, had a very clean leather cover and in fact looked like it had never been opened. The box was even in great shape on an item from 2013. The packaging could have gotten it to China and back without a scratch. It was shipped the same day as purchase. I love it and am very pleased with this seller.

    A comprehensive account of experimental and prototype USAAF/USAF jet fighters from the P-59 to the JSF

    I enjoyed reading this book when I first purchased it in 2021 (although the copy I got back then was a used library book, and I gave it away to Huntington Beach Central Library), and it records the many USAF fighter designs, built or unbuilt, with official pursuit and fighter designations allocated to them by the US Army Air Force and US Air Force. It is interesting to note that there is a chapter in this book that covers to guided missiles that were classified for a while as fighter aircraft, the Hughes Falcon air-to-air missile and BOMARC surface-to-air missile, and that three F-for-Fighter designations (F-95, F-96, and F-97) were originally used for the Sabre Dog, Thunderstreak, and rocket-armed Starfire that were later reclassified as variants of the F-84, F-86, and F-94.     An Aviation Steal at $40

    This "product" that I purchased for $40 was actually three books, with back cover prices amounting to a total of $124.05! So, either somebody took a bath on this, or there is a considerable markup in aviation books in the stores. I really wanted only "Experimental & Prototype U.S. Air Force Jet Fighters" by Dennis R. Jenkins and Tony R. Landis; so, the other two were bonuses to me. The Jenkins/Landis book was a valuable addition to my extensive home library of Air Force aircraft books. It was loaded with photographs, many of which I had never seen before and I've seen a lot of aviation photographs in my 70 years. I highly recommend this book--especially at the price I bought it.
