Reviews
"There's a bewitching urgency to the narration that's impossible to resist. Theo is magnetic... The Goldfinch is a pleasure to read."-- Publishers Weekly, "Drenched in sensory detail, infused with Theo's churning thoughts and feelings, sparked by nimble dialogue, and propelled by escalating cosmic angst and thriller action, Tartt's trenchant, defiant, engrossing, and rocketing novel conducts a grand inquiry into the mystery and sorrow of survival, beauty and obsession, and the promise of art."-- Booklist (starred review), PRAISE FOR THE GOLDFINCH "A long-awaited, elegant meditation on love, memory, and the haunting power of art....Eloquent and assured, with memorable characters....A standout--and well-worth the wait."--Kirkus (starred review)
Synopsis
A young New Yorker grieving his mother's death is pulled into a gritty underworld of art and wealth in this "extraordinary" and beloved Pulitzer Prize winner that "connects with the heart as well as the mind" (Stephen King, New York Times Book Review ). Theo Decker, a 13-year-old New Yorker, miraculously survives an accident that kills his mother. Abandoned by his father, Theo is taken in by the family of a wealthy friend. Bewildered by his strange new home on Park Avenue, disturbed by schoolmates who don't know how to talk to him, and tormented above all by a longing for his mother, he clings to the one thing that reminds him of her: a small, mysteriously captivating painting that ultimately draws Theo into a wealthy and insular art community. As an adult, Theo moves silkily between the drawing rooms of the rich and the dusty labyrinth of an antiques store where he works. He is alienated and in love -- and at the center of a narrowing, ever more dangerous circle. The Goldfinch is a mesmerizing, stay-up-all-night and tell-all-your-friends triumph, an old-fashioned story of loss and obsession, survival and self-invention. From the streets of New York to the dark corners of the art underworld, this "soaring masterpiece" examines the devastating impact of grief and the ruthless machinations of fate (Ron Charles, Washington Post )., A young New Yorker grieving his mother's death is pulled into a gritty underworld of art and wealth in this "extraordinary" and beloved novel that "connects with the heart as well as the mind" (Stephen King, New York Times Book Review ), named a New York Times Best Book of the 21st Century. Only one page was colored on, so "gently used" was a good way to describe this book. The quality is great. It was a really good price. It has no rips, torn pages, even the cover is like new, the appearance is better than described. The seller had good communication. Item arrived in a timely manner and was packaged well. I would buy from this seller again.

  • Too long and boring writing

If this book cut out 1/3 - 1/2 of the wasted run on sentences (one took up 1/3 of a page) this could have been a far better novel. I struggled and got through half and it has been siting there for two years waiting to be completed. For someone who reads I book or more a week, It took me three weeks to struggle through half of the book. I think I"ll just look up the synopsis on line and then donate the book rather than take it on vacation to try and finish. The plot intrigued me but the writing is boring. I wish she would have just gotten to the point. She must have been paid per word on this book.

  • A disturbing page-turner

I’m not done yet, but this book has many unexpected twists & turns. Very nicely written. I’m about 3/4 through and have no clue how this story will end. I can’t imagine what it took to weave this tale. Remarkable!

  • Haven't read enough yet to determine if title fits

What I’ve read so far has kept my attention, like the authors writing style. Maybe a few too many adjectives but I can deal with it.

  • One of the best ever books.

Wonderful book. Hard to put it down to the very end. Tartt is an outstanding writer; her characters and the story line are a piece of art; easy to understand how this was a Pulitzer Prize winner.

  • I loved the Audible version!

This may be one of my favorite books of all time! I don’t care for thrillers, and I would not categorize this book as such, but there are several passages that qualify in my mind. The Audible version is excellent! I miss the voices of the characters and their idiosyncratic behaviors!
