Straight-up Warhammer Imperial Guard action
While the hero of the book is the Imperial commander Macharius, it follows the usual Black Library strategy of using a follower, in this case an ordinary Guardsman who becomes one of Macharius's guards, as a viewpoint character. The story of the conquest of a planet and the vanquishing of the heresy that has taken root there has large-scale and small-scale action, as well as good characterization.
