Fifth studio album by the British rock band. The album contains a continuous piece of music and is a parody of the concept album genre. The album was recorded in late 1971, featuring music composed by Ian Anderson and arranged with the contribution of all band members. The album was the first to include drummer Barrie 'Barriemore' Barlow, replacing the band's previous drummer Clive Bunker.
Reviews"...their music spins a delicate web of sensitive sounds: sometimes lilting, sometimes soaring to form a brilliant backdrop for the meaningful lyrics and improvisational techniques...", 4 stars out of 5 -- "The band would never again sound so ambitious and alive....There's an honesty, charm and fantastic energy to THICK AS A BRICK that the passage of time simply can't erode."
I've bought this album quite a few times over the years from the original first CD issue to many anniversary / remastered editions. It's not really an album that has ever sounded bad, as such. However, this Steven Wilson Remix is absolutely incredible and sounds awesome on vinyl. I don't always like every aspect of Wilson's mixes and there are a few examples on his work on Marillion albums where I didn't like his his mixing decision.
On 'Thick As A Brick', he's absolutely nailed it so if, like me, you thought this album couldn't possibly sound better, think again.
The nice 180g vinyl with original Chrysalis green label is an anorak's delight and the flimsy old newspaper is now part of a glossy booklet but the master of the house is far away....
Another excellent remix from SW, retains all the original character of the recording but subtly improves on instrument/vocal detail and separation. Lacks original ‘newspaper’ fold out sleeve but booklet has some interesting extras at the back.
