Reviews
A vivid and thoughtful evocation of particular personal experiences that have an exuberantly timeless appeal., By turns wry, provocative and sometimes breathtaking...This is a work marked by exquisite insight., An American Childhood does all this so consummately with Annie Dillard's 50s childhood in Pittsburgh that it more than takes the reader's breath away. It consumes you as you consume it, so that, when you have put down this book, you're a different person, one who has virtually experiences another childhood., An American Childhood shimmers with the same rich detail, the same keen and often wry observations as her first book [Pilgrim at Tinker Creek]., The reader who can't find something to whoop about is not alive. An American Childhood is perhaps the best American autobiography since Russell Baker's Growing Up., Every paragraph Dillard writes is full of information, presenting the mundane with inventive freshness and offering exotic surprises as dessert...[Annie Dillard] is one of nature's prize wonders herself--an example of sentient homo sapiens pushing the limits of the creative imagination. She deserves our close attentions., [An American Childhood] combines the child's sense of wonder with the adult's intelligence and is written in some of the finest prose that exists in contemporary America. It is a special sort of memoir that is entirely successful...This new book is [Annie Dillard's] best, a joyous ode to her own happy childhood., "[An American Childhood] combines the child's sense of wonder with the adult's intelligence and is written in some of the finest prose that exists in contemporary America. I ordered three items from this seller, and one was damaged in transit (the seller is not at fault for this). However the seller very quickly righted everything, communicating with me the entire time. The other two items were in perfect condition, arrived on time, and were exactly as described. They were very quick to fix what was wrong, and were very polite about the entire thing. I will be buying from them again in the future.

I’m a sports fan so when I looked through the Seller’s site it was easy to find three sports books I wanted to read. I’ve purchased from this Seller before; their prices are very affordable. I received the book pictured and described. All the books I purchased were mailed in a protective plastic envelope arriving safe and in good shape. Another fun transaction for this satisfied customer.

  • Might have given readers more reason to read it if Pittsburgh was mentioned!

Since I grew up just outside Pittsburgh during the same years that Annie Dillard grew up, I loved remembering many of the same experiences that she shared. Loved the uniqueness of the language used in this area. Loved the book!! Wish my copy had the cover that is pictured. I remember the Pittsburgh area with great fondness and great memories!
