Contains both the original theatrical version of each film and the digitally restored and remastered versions.<BR>First up is STAR WARS; George Lucas's stunning sci-fi masterpiece, and arguably one of the most inventive and entertaining films ever made. As the adventure begins, Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill), an impulsive but good-hearted young man who lives on the dusty planet of Tatooine with his aunt and uncle, longs for the exciting life of a Rebel soldier. The Rebels, led by the headstrong Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher), are fighting against the evil Empire, which has set about destroying planets inhabited by innocent citizens with the Death Star, a fearsome planet like craft commanded by Grand Moff Tarkin (Peter Cushing) and the eternally frightful Darth Vader (David Prowse, with the voice of James Earl Jones). When Luke's aunt and uncle are murdered by the Empire's imperial storm troopers and he mysteriously finds a distress message from Princess Leia in one of his androids, R2-D2 (Kenny Baker), he must set out to find Obi-Wan Kenobi (Alec Guinness), a mysterious old hermit with incredible powers. On his journey, Luke is aided by the roguish, sarcastic mercenary Han Solo (Harrison Ford) and his towering furry sidekick Chewbacca (Peter Mayhew) as they run into a host of perilous situations while trying to rescue the princess and the entire galaxy.<BR>Considered the most morally and emotionally complex of the original Star Wars trilogy, THE EMPIRE STRIKE BACK continues creator George Lucas's epic saga where STAR WARS left off. The Rebel Forces which include young adventurer Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill), rogue pilot Han Solo (Harrison Ford), and the beautiful but seemingly humourless Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher) have been successful in destroying the Evil Empire's Death Star. However, the Empire's top commander, the terrifying Lord Darth Vader (played by David Prowse, voiced by James Earl Jones), is scanning the galaxy for the Rebels' secret location. After a visually stunning showdown on the ice planet Hoth, the Rebels are forced to flee, and Luke separates from Han and Leia.       The Best Set Available of the ORIGINAL UNEDITED theatrical releases

      You will probably be surprised to know that this is the only set that includes all three of the original films (Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back and The Return of the Jedi) in their unedited formats. Please don't waste your money on any other set, you will not find what you are looking for. The cover is the same for whatever region you buy it for, the black edges with the glowing blue center. This version is what we purchased from the U.K., but we have a multi-region player and are able to play it where we live so we got a far better price and saved about $150.00 on the resale price. Multi-region players can be had for about $50.00 on eBay or Amazon, we've had one for about 3 years and love it. Why? we got this set for about $60.00 from England, that's why.       An absolute gem!

      I was absolutely over the moon to find this! My partner remembers the original films before Lucas started fiddling with them, but he was sure they didn't exist in their altered glory on DVD. A bit of internet research and I was able to find this. Haven't watched the films through yet as this is my partner's Christmas present, but I did give the first film a quick check when the set arrived. The disc does specifically say Theatrical Release, and after whizzing through and stopping in various places there was not a single hint of CGI in sight. Visual quality is pretty dismal, but having done my research I was anticipating this. This is the only unaltered version of the original films currently available so it is the price you pay to not have to endure dodgy 90s CGI sticking out like a sore ...

      For the true Star Wars fans

      The only reason you would buy this is for the unaltered versions of three movies. Yes you can buy them on blu ray or find a cheaper set of DVD's but they are all edited and ruined by George Lucas (Han shoots first and the are no dumb, ugly or useless CGI added- all shown as it was in the theaters). It does have the altered versions as well making a total of six discs but that's not why you would buy this. Until an unaltered version comes out for blu ray, this is the best star wars trilogy set you can buy right now.

      Contains original versions

      Bought this purely to see the original theatrical releases - without the garnish - and really enjoyed seeing them again. The originals are video quality with huge letterbox format (to deter you from watching?) although adjust your picture settings to reduce. In sum, if you're of that age where you just want to see the originally released - go for it.

      Great version for fans

      There has been another revision since this release, but this version has the original theatrical releases on the bonus discs. I'm one of those old stick-in-the-muds who saw the films when they were originally released, so my enjoyment is as much based on nostalgia as it is in the story, and I like them like that. The remastering with added effects are more visually what the next generation expect to see from this kind of movie, and if you didn't see them first time round you won't know about the changes. Take your pick and enjoy a series that is more like cowboys and indians in space than sci-fi to be honest, but all the better for it, a goodies versus baddies romp, the bad guy even wears a black hat.
