Set in 1965 Japan, HULA GIRLS tells the story of an ordinary coal miner's daughter-turned hula dancer extraordinaire. With oil quickly replacing coal and mining towns struggling to survive, someone's idea for turning the Japanese town into a Hawaiian village seems farfetched at best. But with the courage and hula skills of one young girl, people start to wonder whether perhaps this is the answer after all.

Entertaining movie
Great movie. I saw Hawaii ukulele virtuoso Jake Shimbukuro in concert last week. He did the soundtrack for "Hula Girls" He was surprised to see a copy of it after the concert. He joked that his mother had not seen the movie. So I gave Jake my brand new copy of "Hula Girls". I already had a few copies of the movie. Jake joked that the DVD would make a great Mother's Day gift.! I'm originally from Hawaii and I love any movies that has hula girls even if it was shot in Japan!

One of the best movies I have ever seen
I watch this when it was first released and fell in love with it. Could never find it I can't figure out why it was never made more readily available. I highly recommend this movie to anyone who wants to know about life struggles and just trying to make yourself better.

Another great film from Japan
Hula Girls is a heartwarming, true story of coal miner's daughter's becoming Hula dancers to save their dying village. It won Best picture in Japan in 2006, and for good reason! Wonderful acting, and fabulous music (from Hawaii's Jake Shimabokuro, and Na Leo). Definitely in my top 10 favorite movie of all time now.

Wonderful Movie with Inspiring Interviews of the Real Dancers
I loved this heartfelt movie and the added features, including interviews with the authentic dancers depicted in the story. The actors and performers were all impressive. There were sad moments, but the finale was exciting. "Four stars+" for this award-winning production.

when all things seem Gray maybe it's time to look past the rainbow
Found this DVD when on vacation in Maui about 8 years ago and was walking by a table it was sitting in for sale. Just picked up and bought. Watched the movie Upon returning from vacation and it's based on a true story. the stories based in Japan and it does have subtitles because it is in Japanese. There's funny moments and then emotional sad moments but all in all very spectacular movie. It's one that I'm sure after seeing that you will advise friends or even loan the movie to them to watch. That's why I had to re-buy the DVD now for the third time. Friends want to borrow it and then it disappears. But it's worth it about another three more
