  • Tedious To Read - Not the Best Story TBH

I love all things Regency, and having read a biography of Lady Caroline Lamb, was looking forward to divulging all the juicy secrets of high society in this, her much feted kiss-and-tell novel. The plotline however is repetitive and tedious, the characters are not well developed nor easy to decipher as metaphors for real socialites of the day, and one gains the impression that she is writing out of a petulant need for self-exoneration and point-scoring, rather than any real talent or joy for writing. Unfortunately the novel is much like it's writer - complex, confused and a bit of a basket case.

  • Flawed but utterly fascinating

Lady Caroline Lamb's 1816 roman à clef concerning her 4 month relationship with Lord Byron and published 4 years after the affair had ended. To my mind unstructured and sometimes confused as a narrative it remains a fascinating insight into Lamb's mind and personality as well as an interesting social comment on 18/19th cent privileged society. Often brutally honest concerning herself and, at times, emotionally extreme I would recommended this to anyone who is interested in the character of one of Britain's more fascinating historical female figures.
