Reviews
"A remarkable work about a complicated and relatively unknown individual. Highly recommended as a valuable contribution to Soviet spy literature and 20th-century history." -- Library Journal, Starred Review " [A] vivid biography ... This exhaustive, crisply written portrait of "one of the greatest spies who ever lived" will fascinate espionage fans." -- Publishers Weekly "A superb biography ... Alive to Sorge's human flaws as much as to his professional competence, and with a salutary vein of anger running through it ... More than a hundred books have been written about him and this is undoubtedly the best : detailed, wry, sympathetic and occasionally oddly moving" -- Ben Macintyre, The Times "A fascinating biography ... Owen Matthews tells the story of Sorge's extraordinary life with tremendous verve and expertise and a real talent for mise en scène . Shanghai in the 1930s and prewar Tokyo, Sorge's stamping grounds, come vividly alive in these pages and the portrait of Sorge himself that emerges is richly authentic " -- William Boyd, New Statesman "Fans of Alan Furst and similar authors will find this true-espionage story fascinating." -- Kirkus Reviews " Magnificently written ... An Impeccable Spy is packed with humour and insight and all served up with a rare lightness of touch ... Ben Macintyre and John le Carré fans alike will find themselves very much at home" -- Oliver Bullough, Observer " Brilliant ... Rezanov [is] a kind of Russian Fitzcarraldo, an imperial visionary in hot pursuit of a mad dream." -- New York Times on GLORIOUS MISADVENTURES "Deftly chronicle[d]. So the settlements are cold, the men are drunk, the trade is slow, but Matthews treats it all with an amused dryness that's as quintessentially British as good gin. The many digressions are in the service of a story that would make a fine Hollywood film." -- Newsweek on GLORIOUS MISADVENTURES "Drawing on diaries and other sources, Mr. Matthews weaves a tale of courage and chicanery, avarice and incompetence . . . [A] well-researched glimpse into an underappreciated era in New World history." -- Wall Street Journal on GLORIOUS MISADVENTURES, Riveting ... Synopsis
SHORTLISTED FOR THE PUSHKIN HOUSE PRIZE 'The most formidable spy in history' Ian Fleming 'A superb biography ... More than a hundred books have been written about him and this is undoubtedly the best' Ben Macintyre Richard Sorge was a man with two homelands. Born of a German father and a Russian mother in Baku in 1895, he moved in a world of shifting alliances and infinite possibility. A member of the angry and deluded generation who found new, radical faiths after their experiences on the battlefields of the First World War, Sorge became a fanatical communist - and the Soviet Union's most formidable spy. Like many great spies, Sorge was an effortless seducer, combining charm with ruthless manipulation. He did not have to go undercover to find out closely guarded state secrets - his victims willingly shared them. As a foreign correspondent, he infiltrated and influenced the highest echelons of German, Chinese and Japanese society in the years leading up to and including the Second World War. His intelligence regarding Operation Barbarossa and Japanese intentions not to invade Siberia in 1941 proved pivotal to the Soviet counteroffensive in the Battle of Moscow, which in turn determined the outcome of the war. Never before has Sorge's story been told from the Russian side as well as the German and Japanese. Owen Matthews takes a sweeping historical perspective and draws on a wealth of declassified Soviet archives - along with testimonies from those who knew and worked with Sorge - to rescue the riveting story of the man described by Ian Fleming as 'the most formidable spy in history'., The thrilling true story of Richard Sorge-the Soviet intelligence operative John le Carr called "the spy to end spies." Great seller. I asked three different sellers the same question about this CD. One did not respond. One said they didn't have time to answer. Valleys_Books_andMore were the only ones to not only answer, but took the time to send a couple pics as well. I purchased immediately after hearing from them. It was a smooth transaction and the CD was in better condition than advertised. Thanks guys!!

I have been humming the most prominent tune in this series, Ashokan Farewell," for days now and it finally prompted me to order the DVDs. The package just arrived this afternoon and I will see about retrieving my old DVD player to watch it all all over again this weekend. The description said it was in "good" shape, but it hardly looks used to my untrained eye. Great price ($10). Well packaged for the journey and delivered on time. Thanks!
