Hoda Kotb, author of Hoda: How I Survived War Zones, Bad Hair, Cancer, and Kathie Lee , and co-host of the Today show "I am always in search of the book I can't put down.  Well, thanks to Melissa Francis, I FOUND it. I may have missed a few nights sleep, but I am so much better for it.  Her book is captivating, revealing and ultimately healing.   Who knew the kid from Little House on the Prairie had such a fascinating real-life story?  I am in awe." Kirkus Review "Chilling memoir by a Fox Business Network anchor and child star chronicles the misery of growing up with a cruel, controlling and abusive stage mother. Francis' narrative grabs readers immediately. One of those intimate, heartbreaking, doubled-edged stories that is hard to read, impossible to put down." Synopsis
The Glass Castle meets The Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother in this dazzlingly honest and provocative family memoir by former child actress and current Fox Business Network anchor Melissa Francis. When Melissa Francis was eight years old, she won the role of lifetime: playing Cassandra Cooper Ingalls, the little girl who was adopted with her brother (played by young Jason Bateman) by the Ingalls family on the world's most famous primetime soap opera, Little House on the Prairie . Despite her age, she was already a veteran actress, living a charmed life, moving from one Hollywood set to the next. But behind the scenes, her success was fueled by the pride, pressure, and sometimes grinding cruelty of her stage mother, as fame and a mother's ambition pushed her older sister deeper into the shadows. Diary of a Stage Mother's Daughter is a fascinating account of life as a child star in the 1980's, and also a startling tale of a family under the care of a highly neurotic, dangerously competitive"tiger mother." But perhaps most importantly, now that Melissa has two sons of her own, it's a meditation on motherhood, and the value of pushing your children: how hard should you push a child to succeed, and at what point does your help turn into harm?, The Glass Castle meets The Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother in this dazzlingly honest and provocative family memoir by former child actress and current Fox Business Network anchor Melissa Francis. I ordered three items from this seller, and one was damaged in transit (the seller is not at fault for this). However the seller very quickly righted everything, communicating with me the entire time. The other two items were in perfect condition, arrived on time, and were exactly as described. They were very quick to fix what was wrong, and were very polite about the entire thing. I will be buying from them again in the future.

Reasonable price for a hardcover children's book, printed on quality, thick, glossy paper. No photo of item on listing, which was a bit lazy (even if it is a low-cost one). Packaging fine, mailed the following day, and postal costs included tracking. Arrived in good time, and with only minor cosmetic damage to the cover. Greatly appreciate it when sellers take the time to treat a low-cost order with care.

  • Intriguing story, writing is mediocre

I enjoyed reading the background of this former child star and present day news person. The author does not have a great writing style and there were quite a few typos in the book. I found the childhood history interesting but it got a little tedious as she describes her adult life. It was sad and a little depressing. She spent a lot of time going into detail about the negative things in her life and brushed off the positive experiences she had. The author seemed very affected by her family's disfunction, but she didn't seem to see the advantages she had been given that led to her success in life. Overall, it was an interesting read since I was familiar with Melissa Francis but if I wasn't aware of her as a child star it might have gotten a little bored and disinterested. It was a ...

  • An interesting read.

It tells about the ups & downs of being famous, and how a parent can uses/abuse the system, so to speak. It tells how parents can be mean and nasty to their children at home, or in public places, but be a completely different person when you hey are on the set with the heir children.
