Las difíciles condiciones de vida de las regiones fronterizas, potencia el éxodo incontrolable de muchos mexicanos que ven en ese cambio de país la posibilidad concreta y real de conseguir prosperidad para sus familias. El problema es histórico. Toda la zona agrícola de Texas ha sustentado su producción en la mano de obra barata que consiguen contratar. Este libro se refiere al período más crítico, los años 50. El protagonista es un joven perdido en las sombras de la explotación laboral. En medio de todo aquel ambiente de miseria deberá forjar su propia identidad. El proceso termina por reencontrarlo con sus raíces.
