Synopsis
The #1 New York Times -bestselling story about American Olympic triumph in Nazi Germany and now the inspiration for the PBS documentary "The Boys of '36'." For readers of Unbroken , out of the depths of the Depression comes an irresistible story about beating the odds and finding hope in the most desperate of times--the improbable, intimate account of how nine working-class boys from the American West showed the world at the 1936 Olympics in Berlin what true grit really meant. It was an unlikely quest from the start. With a team composed of the sons of loggers, shipyard workers, and farmers, the University of Washington's eight-oar crew team was never expected to defeat the elite teams of the East Coast and Great Britain, yet they did, going on to shock the world by defeating the German team rowing for Adolf Hitler. The emotional heart of the tale lies with Joe Rantz, a teenager without family or prospects, who rows not only to regain his shattered self-regard but also to find a real place for himself in the world. Drawing on the boys' own journals and vivid memories of a once-in-a-lifetime shared dream, Brown has created an unforgettable portrait of an era, a celebration of a remarkable achievement, and a chronicle of one extraordinary young man's personal quest., Now a Major Motion Picture Directed by George Clooney The #1 New York Times -bestselling story about the American Olympic rowing triumph in Nazi Germany--from the author of Facing the Mountain . The two plates arrived broken in multiple pieces. None of the 4 pieces were individually wrapped. Contacted the seller immediately and received a prompt apology and a significant portion of the cost in a refund. Thank you for addressing the situation so promptly.

  • Great Sports Book

Perhaps the best sports book I have read.... better than Chariots of Fire. Very inspiring as well. A tale of the rowing crew from the University of Washington who not only won almost all their intercollegiate races in the 1930's but went on to win the 1936 Olympics. The story focuses on one character who overcame immense odds starting when he was 10 years old, to his success in life. It is also about Depression era America. Read this book!!!

  • Says it all

I rate this book up there with "Killers of the Flower Moon", "Unbroken", "Seabiscuit" and a number of other GREAT books. It is a lot more than the story of a college rowing crew going to the 1936 Olympics. It is another illustration of why my parent's generation were the GREATEST. It also gives an "eyewitness" account of the Great Depression and the rise of Hitler in Germany. A must read.

  • tried to be there, now I know how they did that

This novel helped give a perspective to my experience of rowing at the University of Oregon. In 1969-70 the freshman coach was first year grad student David Thompson, who graduated the previous year from U of W and the Husky crew. The book gave me a deeper insight into the genealogy of our rowing style, the historical perspective of our beautiful cedar Pocock racing shells, and our coaches relation other rowing programs, especially California's. The book is absolutely a must read for any American oarsperson and their friends or family. They can not help but benefit learning the history it contains. I doubt it will disappoint anyone else.. • The Boys in the Boat is a novel that draws you into the life of these people.

A terrific book. This author catches the reader's interest in the first chapter. This is a great look back to life of Americans during this time, and how they survived during the Depression and Dust Storms of the West.

  • Profound true story; don't miss this one

Beautifully written account of the boatful of boys from working class towns in Washington state who went on to Olympic gold in rowing in the 1936 games in Germany. The focus on one boy in particular and the childhood hardships he had to overcome keeps our interest and personalizes the story in a compelling way. But equally engaging are descriptions of the others: the other collegiate rowers, the coaches, the gifted boat maker, the friends and family, the newscasters. The story includes insightful probings into the effects of the Depression and the Dust Bowl, the gathering clouds of war in Europe, and the political wrangling over whether to attend games in Germany at all considering what was already being reported about Hitler's regime. It contains detailed, rather fascinating explanations ...
