Appearing here in the director’s preferred 185-minute cut as well as the version that was originally suppressed by Soviet authorities, the masterwork Andrei Rublev is one of Tarkovsky’s most revered films, an arresting meditation on art, faith, and endurance.     A stark reminder of choked passion amid the senseless and war in black and white.

    This film is long, but worth the time put in. There is no color, save for at the end, when we are shown some of the painter's work. There are many reasons I thoroughly enjoyed watching. One is the way the work exhibits some of the characteristics of the soul of the people: Andrei accepts his barren fate, until he meets with an orphan, the son of a dead bell-maker. This boy uses a wily freeness, or persuasion, if you will, to bend the rules and buck the system, so to speak, thereby changing the course of the river of his life, and ultimately, that of the erstwhile fatalist. I highly recommend this piece.
