    And what a mind it is

    Reading about the author through his essays is compelling alone. What a career! Only a very curious mind travels through so many areas at such depth. Perhaps the one thing that stuck with me most was Bateson's sense that he had never really helped a alcoholic recover. He wonders whether it was the sober patient's insanity that caused them to drink in order to recover, at least a little, both sanity and acceptance from others. It is not an easy book but quite worthwhile. A friend asked me why I started reading Bateson here and not in other more approachable works. I admitted it was just by chance.
