Mr. Moto, The Asian Sherlock Holmes.
The1930s and 40s was a good time for Oriental detective movies. You had Charlie Chan, Mr. Wong Detective and let's not forget Mr. Moto. Played by Peter Lorre. Lorre has contracted by Fox (20th Century Fox) and thought he would get his big break at this studio, but the success of the first Mr. Moto film saw that he would be type-cast in the part. The 8 original Mr. Moto films are all excellent and feature a who's who of Hollywood character actors in suporting roles. Although these were considered to be B movies and all had low budgets, they are all very entertaining. Moto, is a Japanese detective, who, unlike Charlie Chan and Mr. Wong, Mr. Moto is a master at Judo and disguise. He is also an expert in criminology, paleontology, archeology and many other things (kind of like an Asian Sherlock Holmes). If you like classic mystery / suspense films, Mr. Moto series is for you. Very engaging mystery detective series
Say what you want but black and white films can be pretty entertaining. What I like with Mr. Motor are the ‘Japanese’ idiosyncrasies he portrays. Also, how people, language and mannerism were different in the day. Peter Lorre actually makes a believable oriental fella.
