"I have read it through from beginning to end and would have read more had there been any more to read." --George Bernard Shaw, "He found the people generous and the climate pleasant; he considers the United States an ideal place for tramps." George Bernard Shaw, "He found the people generous and the climate pleasant; he considers the United States an ideal place for tramps."  -New York Times, "I have read it through from beginning to end and would have read more had there been any more to read."  -George Bernard Shaw, The pen of W. H. Davies, super-tramp and writer, reveals a fascinating picture of a vast, bustling continent intent on its own affairs and of a Britain on the cusp of change between old certainties and an uneasy future. William Henry Davies was born in a pub and learnt early in life to rely on his wits and his fistsand to drink. Around the turn of the century, when he was twenty-two, his restless spirit of adventure led him to set off for America, and he worked around the country taking casual jobs where he could, thieving and begging where he couldnt. His experiences were richly coloured by the bullies, tricksters, and fellow-adventurers he encounteredNew Haven Baldy, Wee Shorty, The Indian Kid, and English Harry, to name but a few. He was thrown into prison in Michigan, beaten up in New Orleans, witnessed a lynching in Tennessee, and got drunk pretty well everywhere. A harrowing accident forced him to return to England and the seedy world of doss-houses and down-and-outs like Boozy Bob and Irish Tim. When George Bernard Shaw first read the Autobiography in manuscript, he was stunned by the raw power of its unvarnished narrative. It was his enthusiasm, expressed in the Preface, that ensured the initial success of a book now regarded as a classic.

Synopsis
The pen of W. H. Davies, super-tramp and writer, reveals a fascinating picture of a vast, bustling continent intent on its own affairs and of a Britain on the cusp of change between old certainties and an uneasy future., A successful book in its time, now regarded as a classic, Autobiography of a Super-tramp relays the experiences of a young, destitute Welshman in America and Britain. The pen of W. H. Davies, vagabond and writer, reveals a fascinating picture of a vast, bustling continent intent on its own affairs and of a Britain on the cusp of change between old certainties and an uneasy future. Near the turn of the century, when he was 22, Davies' restless spirit led him to the United States, where he worked around the country taking casual jobs where he could, thieving and begging where he couldn't. His experiences were richly colored by the bullies, tricksters, and fellow adventurers he encountered--New Haven Baldy, Wee Shorty, the Indian Kid, and English Harry, to name but a few. When George Bernard Shaw first read the manuscript of Davies' adventures, he was stunned by the raw power of its unvarnished narrative., At the end of the 19th century, W.H. Davies hustled his way across America, working when he could, begging & stealing when he couldn't. He saw life on the breadline. He was beaten up in New Orleans, thrown into prison in Michigan & was present at lynchings in Tennessee. He was truly a diarist of the nether side of the American dream., William Henry Davies was born in a pub and learnt early in life to rely on his wits and his fistsand to drink. The seller was very responsive and answered me on a timely matter. The product itself came in its packaging and was new, not used at all. The packaging was not beat up or anything, safely delivered to my mailbox. No mix ups and zero stress with delivery. The price for the product is completely understandable for the product. I really appreciate the seller and I am very happy to have purchased through this seller. Completely trustable!

Seller handles a massive inventory so I give them grace on the slow processing and shipping. They were very communicative and prompt with their response when I messaged in asking about it. Book was in good condition as described. Small ding on the page edges which wasn't mentioned, but that's fairly common even at your typical book store. Still a good value and I'd buy from them again.
