The Compact Edition of the OED reproduces micrographically, in a single volume, the complete text of the highly acclaimed Second Edition of The Oxford English Dictionary. In this edition, nine pages of the original fit onto just one. This volume comes in a slipcase with a magnifying glass and a new user's guide which explains the conventions of the OED., The Compact Oxford English Dictionary provides all the wealth of scholarship found in the original twenty-volume OED, in just one volume, and at a fraction of the price. The Compact is not an abridgement but a direct photoreduction of the entire twenty-volume set, with nine pages of the original on every nine-by-twelve page of the Compact (a magnifying glass comes with it to make reading easier). It includes definitions of 500,000 words, 290,000 main entries, 137,000 pronunciations, 249,300 etymologies, 577,000 cross-references, and over 2,412,000 illustrative quotations., When the twenty-volume Oxford English Dictionary , Second Edition, appeared years ago, the public response was extraordinary. The AP and UPI announced publication over their newswires. Time and Newsweek ran full-page articles. The New Yorker published an extensive essay. Virtually every major paper in American and in Great Britain covered the event. And from every corner, the praise was lavish. Time called it "a scholarly Everest." As in the Second Edition , the Compact combines in one alphabetical sequence the sixteen volumes of the first OED and the four Supplements --plus an extra five thousand new words to bring this monumental dictionary completely up to date. And it is monumental, with definitions of 500,000 words, 290,000 main entries, 137,000 pronunciations, 249,300 etymologies, 577,000 cross-references, and over 2,412,000 illustrative quotations. But as large as it is, perhaps its most important feature is its historical focus. The OED records not only words and meanings currently in use but also those that have long been considered obsolete. Moreover, under each definition of a word is a chronologically arranged group of quotations that illustrate the word's usage down through the years, beginning with its earliest known appearance. The result is a dictionary that offers unique insight into the way our language has, over the centuries, grown, changed, and been put to use.     Good price for the book. Shipping was slow. Messaged the seller a week after I ordered it to see when they were going to ship it. They responded immediately and said it would be shipped out soon. Got it about a week later. Book did arrive in the date range that they provided though  Minimal packaging. Book is Shrink wrapped and only wrapped in thin plastic. No bubble wrap. Book is in good shape though.

    The book I bought was reasonably priced and when it arrived it was in the 'Like New' condition specified in the listing. However, when I saw that the seller had not shipped the book after more than 15 days had passed since my order I felt I must write to say that I had actually placed an order with the seller and inquire when it planned to send the book. The brusque reply was that a tracking number was available, but no number HAD been created until I pointed out that I had placed the order.

    OED --- A look at the development of the English language

    When a college student, I would take breaks when studying in the college library to read an entry in the OED. That was my process of clearing my mind from my major computer science and refreshing myself before diving back in. I missed those times and that option, thus this purchase.

    great compact dictionary

    though a bit heavy, you have the entire oxford dictionary the best in the world, not only are there definitions they add 3 or 4 examples of the words use in literature which can help understand the way the word really works, for me , this is the clincher ! love it

    Everything about the elements of the English vocabulary before about 1990

    It is the completely glorious, spectacular compendium of the beautiful, regular and irregular, rational and irrational, multicultural history of the English, with its justifiably famous illuminating examples of usage, before approx 1990 (published in 1991). Words of wisdom from John McWhorter fly through my thoughts as I peruse at random (the most fun way to use it, IMHO) - what a fun way to while away an hour or two! Back in the day I was myopic to such a degree I could read it without magnification (yes, it's true!) Alas, no longer.

    Excellent dictionary

    This is the complete Oxford English Dictionary, with 9 micro-pages per page. You will definitely need a magnifier to read it. I bought a 4x magnifier for reading this (though my phone camera also works fine). The lexicography of the OED is incomparable.
