Synopsis
Traces the history of graffiti in New York City against the backdrop of the struggle that developed between the city and the writers., In the 1960s and early 1970s, young people in New York City radically altered the tradition of writing their initials on neighborhood walls. Influenced by the widespread use of famous names on billboards, in neon, in magazines, newspapers, and typographies from advertising and comics, city youth created a new form of expression built around elaborately designed names and initials displayed on public walls, vehicles, and subways. Critics called it "graffiti," but to the practitioners it was "writing." Taking the Train traces the history of "writing" in New York City against the backdrop of the struggle that developed between the city and the writers. Austin tracks the ways in which "writing"- a small, seemingly insignificant act of youthful rebellion-assumed crisis-level importance inside the bureaucracy and the public relations of New York City mayoral administrations and the Metropolitan Transportation Authority for almost two decades. Taking the Train reveals why a global city short on funds made "wiping out graffiti" an expensive priority while other needs went unfunded. Although the city eventually took back the trains, Austin eloquently shows how and why the culture of "writing" survived to become an international art movement and a vital part of hip-hop culture., In the 1960s and early 1970s, young people in New York City radically altered the tradition of writing their initials on neighborhood walls. Good price for the book. Shipping was slow. Messaged the seller a week after I ordered it to see when they were going to ship it. They responded immediately and said it would be shipped out soon. Got it about a week later. Book did arrive in the date range that they provided though Minimal packaging. Book is Shrink wrapped and only wrapped in thin plastic. No bubble wrap. Book is in good shape though.

Shipping took almost 2 weeks but the book arrived brand new and as listed. Was shipped in a plastic mailer with no protection but I got lucky it seems as the book suffered no damage in the shipping. Regardless, I recommend the seller, book was as described and brand new! Thank you so much!

  • Pretty comprehensive view of NYC graffiti.

As someone who grew up and "lived" the lifestyle and culture of Graffiti, I found this book to be pretty comprehensive on the subject. Through many interviews and much research, the author seemed to have a firm grasp on the background and history of NYC graffiti, and the artists who created and proliferated the movement. I found it to be an easy read, while helping to shed some light on the underground culture that originated in New York City.

  • An interesting angle to graffiti

This book looks at graffiti from a civic and social/political perspective. Instead of try and recount the history of subway writing, this book looks at the cause and effect relationship the city of New York and the media played on the direction of graffiti. A tough read at times because it is an extremely cerebral look at the culture.
