  • RYAN'S DAUGHTER

I love this two part mini series. Robert Mitchum has an unusual part for Mitchum, and he does an arguably good job in my opinion. That of the cuckold husband. The bad part in my opinion is the part the great John Mills plays of the village idiot. In my opinion, it should have been left out. I had to look away because it was gross, to say the least. But this movie has a surprising ending. It is a good movie to watch on a cold and rainy night.

  • A Wild Irish Rose blossoms into Ryan's Daughter

Love and loyalty, passion and romance, hatred and betrayal are all drivers of this tale that borrows strongly from Romeo and Juliet, Caesar and Cleopatra, and the Hatfield and McCoys. Set in Northern Ireland, amid the English occupying forces and Irish resistance, small village passions and politics, bullying and vendettas set the scene for this story: a wild, coming of age, young Irish lass (Sarah Miles) is encouraged into marriage with an older man (Robert Mitchum), conservative in manner, newly arrived in the village to teach at the school. Adjusting to this new relationship, Sarah meets a young English officer, recently transferred to Ireland to heal from his war injuries, both physical and emotional, and a passionate affair develops. The triangle is thus formed and the tale begins. Supported by such talent as Trevor Howard, John Mills and Leo McKern, all the characters come to charismatic life on the screen. Two other no less important characters that grab us and hold us dear are the music by Maurice Jarre and Freddie Young's incredible photography of the Irish countryside. Magnificent elements all pulled together by award winning director David Lean. These are 200+ minutes that are well worth your time and a well deserved addition to any movie collection.

  • Illicit affair set against the deeper background of the Irish rebellion and the peoples' reactions to it.

The scenic beauty of Ireland lends a spectacular background for this brooding film. The actors are superb, particularly that of John Mills as a simpleton and Trevor Howard as a priest. Believable characters set during the time of the Irish rebellion. Well made picture with a winning score.

  • Entertaining

It is a David Lean movie with spectacular scenery of the western coast of Ireland with Oscar winning cinematography and music by Maurice Jarre. It is also an interesting historical film set during World War I taking place in a small nationalist Irish community with British soldiers overseeing it. The characters were all interesting, but the story was disappointing even though entertaining.

  • Great movie...music and scenery

It was so good watching this classic from the 1970 era. The music was a reminder from the days when it put you in the middle of the story. Plus the scenery of Ireland was magnificent!

  • Forbidden romance

A great movie attacked by critics who didn't rate it for what it deserved. Great performances by all the actors and actresses, and the movie itself is a cherished part of my teenage years.

  • Very entertaining

Spent a nice, quiet evening with a friend watching this movie. He had seen it when it first came out when he got out of the service and he wanted to see it again.

  • Perfect.

Besides the fabulously definitive photographic captures of Irish landscape, it combines heartbreaking realities of civil war with human needs in a repressive Catholic society.
