Reviews
"Young people should be taught this book in schools. A much-needed take on disability history and our power in protest."-- Frances Ryan, Guardian columnist and author of Crippled"A book of rage, power and hope. This is a testament to collective power, a resounding rejection of the silencing of disability history, and a story of the community's fight for survival in a dehumanizing system. I wish I could go back and gift newly disabled me this book. She would have felt less alone." -- Bethany Handley, Shaw Trust Disability Power 100 finalist and author of Cling Film"More than a history lesson, this is a call to arms. Igniting a fire for today's battles, and unflinchingly chronicling past struggles, this book is a must-read for anyone who cares about equality, justice and fairness." -- Kamran Mallick, Chief Executive of Disability Rights UK"A fascinating and rigorous journey through a century of disability activism, and a powerful, urgent call for societal and cultural change centering the lives and voices of disabled people." -- Elinor Cleghorn, author of Unwell Women"A vital, overlooked history, reminding us we can make a better world for disabled people." -- Lucy Webster, journalist, campaigner and author of The View from Down Here: Life As a Young Disabled Woman"This book traces disability justice across generations, yet feels so current and pressing. A damning indictment of the state's treatment of disabled people, it's also an ode to our creativity, perseverance and resilience. Charlton-Dailey gives voice to the voiceless, and tells these stories with grace and elegance." -- Grace Spence Green, doctor and author of To Exist As I Am"This is an incredibly important book, tracing the much-overlooked history of how disability rights have been fought for, won, and lost in the UK over the last century, and how the fight is continuing. Filled with passion, rage, and hope, this should be required reading in schools across the country." -- Laura Elliott, disability journalist and author of Awakened, "Young people should be taught this book in schools. A much-needed take on disability history and our power in protest."-- Frances Ryan, Guardian columnist and author of Crippled"A book of rage, power and hope. Synopsis
From the 'crippled suffragette', to '80s punks chaining themselves to buses, to campaigners taking a stand online, this book celebrates the amazing activists and protest actions behind the UK's long battle for disabled people's rights to live. Rachel Charlton-Dailey highlights a shockingly overlooked tradition of disabled struggle. She unpacks how British attitudes and policy went so wrong in the twenty-first century, and interviews campaigners and disabled people about how they have reclaimed power, from resisting government reforms to changing the media narrative. She explores live frontiers in the push for civil rights--from the scandalous inaccessibility of our education and transport systems, to the existential debates about genetic screening and 'the right to die'. In this powerful book, honoring past disability activism becomes a call to action. Charlton-Dailey shows readers how hard, and how often, disabled people and their allies have fought, and won. She gives them the energy to keep fighting back., A 100-year history of enraging injustices and inspiring campaigns: the fight for British disability rights isn't over., A 100-year history of enraging injustices and inspiring campaigns: the fight for British disability rights isn't over. - 4***7 (217)- Bewertung vom Käufer.Letzter MonatBestätigter Kauf1st edition, 2nd impression edition of "The Drunken Forest," by Gerald Durrell is as pictured & described. Arrived quickly & safely! Got a great deal on it! Great communication! The book, with a protective mylar cover, was wrapped in bubble wrap, then wrapped in sturdy cardboard, then placed in a rugged bubble mailer! Fort Knox in a mailer! So hard to get an early edition of this classic! So happy to add to my growing collection of nature & science books! Thank you! !!Seller Highly Recommended!!
- 6***6 (77)- Bewertung vom Käufer.Letzte 6 MonateBestätigter KaufThis delivery was earliest date! Condition, value, quality - all as described. (My mistake was not requiring the publishing date to be 1958. This was 1977.) This IS a Viking Portable Library copy of Dante's Divine Comedy in English, translated by Laurence Binyon, but it is with a cover DIFFERENT from what was shown. The tracking number was listed as from "UPS", but should have been listed as from "USPS." Contact with this seller alleviated tracking issues. I recommend this seller! Thank you!
