Fine Illustrations
Carl Giles was arguably the finest newspaper cartoonist of the 20th Century. The cartoons may be a bit mystifying for current readers as the Britain of that time is remote from us. My technique is to study the picture carefully before reading the caption. The illustrations often have discreet gags that have to be appreciated. It is amazing as to how much detail he put into the background illustrations. To think that he kept this up for nearly 50 years is astonishing.
