Awesome Set - Beware of Bootlegs
This box set is beautiful. I ordered two sets, returned the first because it was not what I have seen in pictures that match the UPC. Here’s what I found.
The authentic set should have “books” that contain the DVDs on clear plastic with artwork behind; cases should not be cheap black plastic. Also the trunk should be large with a few spacers front and back. If the cases are a tight fit and the “case” is folded single-layer cardboard, rather than thick board, be wary. The informational booklet in the authentic set has a thicker card stock cover, the cheap bootleg has a thin paper cover. The authentic will also have a blue “lip” around the inside of the case where the lid closes. Beware of the smaller set that has no thickness to the case and no blue “lip” inside. The fake was single-layer folded card stock.
There is a difference in the quality of the movies on the discs. The authentic set should have few or no “artifacts.” The difference is subtle in the quality, but it’s there if you know what you’re looking for.
The set is worth it but consider buying it from someone who has pictures of the actual item to check for the qualities I mentioned above. Some listings have images of both the large set with the books and the small set with the black plastic. Careful with those.
But if you get the authentic, beautiful set, it’s lovely and high quality. A wonderful collection of all the movies from Universal leaving only 8 Abbott & Costello movies to purchase from other studios.
I hope this helps someone. I hate bootlegs, especially those that are so good it’s hard to tell they are fakes until you can compare it to an authentic set. I was buying it as a gift and refused to settle for the cheap low-quality version. Found a used, authentic one for the same price as the new fake. Used is worth it if you know you’re getting the real thing.
