  • An American classic.

' ...they promised to take our land, and they took it' You don't review a book such as this. Bury my Heart has carved its own place in the canon of American historical writing. All I will say is that I bought another copy to replace the last one that had fallen apart through so much use.

  • Red honorable; white deplorable.

A heart rending account of the way that we, the white races, made, and broke, treaty after treaty; and treated a noble people with contempt. The Indians were far more likely to keep their word, whilst we never did. Of course their were a few hotheads among them, but often the level headed chiefs overruled these, enabling their word to be kept, and this even in the face of our contemptuous and callous disregard of covenants and treaties. We repeatedly broke signed treaties recognising land ownership; driving back and forcing Indians into so-called reservations, which were devoid of game and useless for growing crops, with the water brackish and disease ridden. ---Cruelty knows no bounds.

  • Indian culture destroyed by the white man. A depressing read.

If you are a lover of Indian culture you'll find this book depressing. I didn't realise there were so many Indian tribes. By the time I had reached about half way in the book I was depressed and also bored with it all. Also have the film. Must admit I enjoyed it more.

  • A little window

A small window into activities that modern America wants to sweep under the carpet. Each of the stories were so interesting that I researched each one individually. I would recommend reading this book as a start to modern American history.

  • Very readable, and moving.

This is a true story of the indigenous people of North America, and the terrible treatment (including genocide) they experienced at the hands of the new immigrants, as well as the destruction of their customs and way of life.

  • Well worth buying

I have not finished reading it yet. But as a long term huge admirer of Native American culture, just when you think you know all the history, you can learn a lot more from this book.
