The Truly Wild West
Set in the Rockies around 1840, the film is based on the true story of legendary mountain man Hugh Glass. Abandoned & left to die after he's mauled by a grizzly, Hugh sets out on a quest to seek revenge on the man who deserted him. The scenery is spectacular & ominous -- in fact, the vast wilderness scenery is one of the stars of the show. Leonardo Di Caprio does his usual excellent work as Hugh Glass, Altho he spends about half the film literally crawling & incoherent after the bear attack. He won the Oscar for this role. This is a good but not great film. Worth seeing for the scenery alone.

Excellent survival movie
This movie has a great combination of action/adventure and survival techniques in early America. Many people said that this movie was dry or slow but I thought it was interesting. If I would find anything wrong or not necessary in this movie, it would be the lighting. Apparently, the director had a thing about using natural lighting which meant a lot of the movie looked dark since much of it was in the trees or forest areas. But, it did not really detract from the story. It just seemed odd. As far as DiCaprio's performance, it was very good and of course he won an Oscar for it. But, really, almost any actor who had this role could have won an Oscar performing in this character. I recommend this movie.

Wars not seen
The Revenant is a gritty, well acted story based on real people, real events. DiCaprio in his role matches the gravitas of Charlton Heston in Ben Hur, Peter O'Toole in Lawrence of Arabia, Al Pacino in Godfather. It is a story set in winter conditions, the rivals and archetypal combatants being Natives and Trappers. But, the real story is the love of a father for his murdered son, and his relentless pursuit of his son's killer. This is filmed outside, in the most challenging conditions, augmented by some clever computer graphics. The word 'Spectacular' is on the cover. It is not an overstatement.

The Revenant
Maybe if you're a De Caprio fan, you will like this. The story would have been better , but it was unlikely that Leonardo could have carried out the effort to survive that the story required. The worst aspect was the lighting...I don't know what the director was thinking, but about half of the movie is difficult to watch because the lighting is so inadequate. It may not be horrible, but it's far from great....only good, at best.

The Revennant was a well chosen title name for the movie.
DiCcaprio excellant in the part during the entire movie and the section where was attacked by the bear was extremely well done and appeared to be a real situation.

Brutal and Brilliant!
I prefer Jane Austin adaptations, films like Pride and Prejudice and Sense and Sensibility. Graphic violence does not appeal to me. Nevertheless, I make it a point to view movies that win the major Oscars. Leonardo Dicaprio has been on the A-List in Hollywood for a long time and has proven himself to be an excellent actor, so I thought perhaps he was awarded the 2016 Best Actor Oscar simply because his "time had come." After watching The Revenant, I changed my mind. He was given the award for a truly remarkable performance. The sheer physicality of his role was stunning. I found this film difficult to watch at times, but I was determined to view it in its entirety. Both Dicaprio as protagonist and Tom Hardy as antagonist gave truly Oscar-worthy performances - I prayed for the survival and success of the good man who should have died more than once during the course of the film and whose son had been savagely murdered, and the ultimate justice that would befall a truly nefarious villain. I found myself becoming very emotionally involved with Dicaprio's quest for revenge tempered with wisdom in a world of sickening brutality where human life held little value and racial prejudice and hatred ran rampant among the American and French fur trappers and Native Americans. (This was NOT a world I would like to have inhabited!) The philosophical flashbacks to his ghostly revenant wife and the symbolism of the tree representing human strength and endurance in the face of overwhelming adversity were not overdone. The references were beautifully incorporated into the film when Dicaprio needed them most. Perhaps not for the faint of heart, this was a powerful film full of beautiful cinematography and impressive, demanding performances. It offered the viewer a profound statement on the power of the human spirit to survive and conquer amidst the obstacles of a cruel and hostile world.

Snow, snow, and more snow
If you like action, great acting, awesome cinematography, suspense and a good story, this movie is for you. Tom Hardy and Leo DiCaprio were excellent, along with Domhnall Gleeson and the rest of the supporting cast. You really got a feel for how rough, cold and lethal life was back then - the hostile natives, harsh environment, etc. It was a noteworthy movie on many different levels - I HIGHLY recommend it!

great 'effects' POOR story line, at best
Made little sense to us, how survival in freezing water and temps could be tolerated 'beyond' our understanding, for some FURS. We understand who the indians were looking for, but the lines became blury, and I don't know if the daughter was found. WHO are the good guys. very confusing, start to finish..

Even I, an English major, had to look this up. the man keeps coming back....
it's a rough movie. life can be harsh. this is one of those movies that i find cathartic and cleansing. not sci-fi, but based on the harsh realities of the time and place. Good story, and credible. it is based off on older movie starring richard harris, but they changed the story. the connection is that the protagonist is mauled by a bear and left to die by his friends, and her survives and comes after those who left him behind. same time and place, but the rest of the story is different. bow and arrow and musket violence, some bad language. basically a man's movie. my wife can't handle it. if you liked Mel Gibson's Apocalypto, the thirteenth warrior, etc., you'll like this one.

Some of It is Hard to Believe as True
The story line was difficult to follow and some of the survival situations did not seem realistic, i.e. Glass floats down a river surrounded by chunks of ice for a long period of time. Hypothermia should have killed him. He is severely infected from his wounds (he is told that he smells!) yet he survives without any kind of antibiotics except for some kind Indian who chews some herbs and treats his wounds, just too far-fetched to believe some of these situations. OK, based on a true story, but I think the truth was stretched a bit.
