When Nikolai "Kolya" Rodchenko's plane makes an emergency landing in the Soviet Union, the world-famous dancer, played by Mikhail Baryshnikov, has reason to feel terrified: now that the defector is back on Russian soil, the authorities may refuse to let him leave again. But the KGB actually has a subtler and more clever plan: they want Kolya to return of his own free will. They send him to Siberia to meet with another famous defector, Raymond Greenwood (Gregory Hines), a talented African-American tap dancer, who has requested Russian citizenship because he'd become fed up with racism at home.Despite their clashing ideologies, the two men find that their love of dance overcomes political differences. But Kolya is determined to go back to the United States, and Raymond is just as determined not to leave his wife, a Soviet citizen. In a strange role reversal, the two must find common ground for either to get what they want. Baryshnikov's graceful, gravity-defying balletic dancing and Hines's loose-limbed, seemingly effortless tap dancing are among the film's best moments.Product Identifiers

For the Love of Dance, catch this one.
This movie was made before high-dollar special FX films, but the scene where Gregory Hines dances around the rehearsal studio and you never once see the camera in the mirror is extraordinary. Even better is when Mikhail and Gregory dance together. It is one of the best dance sequences I have seen. This movie isn't just about dance. The movie is set in Russia during the cold war, so it gives younger viewers a glimpse of what life was life "back then." Mikhail is a Russian dancer who has defected to the United States and Gregory Hines is an American defector to Russia and their worlds collide after a plane crash leaves Mikhail back in his homeland. The power of politicians is clearly represented and adds to the overall suspense. The scenes where they attempt to escape from the KGB is heart pounding and well executed. Great dancing from two legends
I saw this movie a long time ago. The plot isn't that great, but the dancing is spectacular! Where else can you see Mikhail Barynishikov and Gregory Hines dance together? Fun movie - great dancing!
Very entertaining movie with great dancing by the best ballet dancer in the world Mikhail Baryshnikov and the great late tap dancing Gregory Hines. This is actress Isabella Rosselini's movie debut. Insights $ adventure beyond dance
Great movie with world class dancers....and "how it was made" director cuts. In fine playing condition. A rewarding insightful look at Russo-American relations...still relevant today. Great Movie Worth Seeing Many Times...
