ONCE AN EAGLE was a seven-part miniseries originally telecast December 2, 1976 through January 13, 1977; the first and last installments ran two hours each, while the interim episodes each ran 60 minutes. Based on the Anton Myrer novel, the series charts thirty years in the careers of two military men, from the outbreak of World War I to the aftermath of World War II. Sam Damon (Sam Elliot) is the "Gallant," a straight-arrow type who is an excellent family man and praiseworthy warrior. Courtney Massingale (Cliff Potts) is the "Goofus," a womanizing, self-aggrandizing conniver who knows how to play the angles to the top. ONCE AN EAGLE was the second of four story arcs seen on the NBC anthology series BEST SELLERS; it was preceded by CAPTAINS AND THE KINGS, and followed by SEVENTH AVENUE and THE RHINEMAN EXCHANGE.Product Identifiers

Not as good as I remember
I only got to see parts of the first couple of episodes, but remembered those fondly. After re-reading an edition of 'Once An Eagle' that was actually published by the Army War College, I decided to take the plunge & order the DVD mini-series. It started as well as I remembered, but unfortunately it went downhill. The character of Courtney Massengale's daughter, played by Melanie Griffith, was given entirely too much screen time.....maybe because someone really liked the little-girl voice she used to be known for, because she didn't have a lot of acting chops. The character of Massengale was changed in subtle, but lame ways: largest being that in the book, he refused to call anyone by a nickname or a shortened name. Here, that characteristic is gone. The book ends with the central character, Sam Damon in a thinly disguised Vietnam. The mini-series ends after a climactic battle in the SW Pacific. The performances of Sam Elliott, Darleen Carr, Glenn Ford, Andrew Stevens, and Amy Irving are flawless. Cliff Potts' Massengale is damaged by the multiple changes by the screenwriters. This is OK, but doesn't do the book justice, and it's certainly no Shogun, or even Rich Man, Poor Man.Bestätigter Kauf: JaArtikelzustand: Gebraucht

Didn't quite understand the title, so maybe I missed something.

Once An Eagle......
This is a DVD set made from the TV mini-series shown many years ago. A very good series based on the #1 New York Times bestseller book of the same name by Anton Myrer. I became a big fan of Sam Elliott after seeing him in his role of Sam Damon. The story is well executed by the whole cast.Watching this in current day may, to some people seem dated, as it first screened in the 70's but the story remains a strong and sound one.Bestätigter Kauf: JaArtikelzustand: Gebraucht

Early Sam Elliot
Follows an Army lifer from before WW1 thru Korea. I thoroughly enjoyed the mini series when it first aired in the seventies. "Winds of War" & "War, and Remembrance" it isn't, but if you are a Veteran it is an enjoyable watch. For "all's fair in love, and war". A great watch
This is the quintessential story of 2 officers with complely different leadership styles and goals. Based on the classic novel, this mini series does a fairly decent rendition of the book. Characters finely portrayed
Almost as good as the novel; characters are finely portrayed by Sam Elliott and Cliff Potts---the hero and one of the villains of the piece. Elliott is particularly heroic and Potts especially unlikable as a general with more arrogance than sense.Bestätigter Kauf: JaArtikelzustand: Gebraucht
