    Synopsis
For anybody who loves horses, and for all of those who are thrilled by horse racing and the behind-the-scenes drama of the track, The Horse That God Built is must reading. --Michael Korda, author of Horse People Most of us know the legend of Secretariat, the tall, handsome chestnut racehorse whose string of honors runs long and rich: the only two-year-old ever to win Horse of the Year, in 1972; winner in 1973 of the Triple Crown, his times in all three races still unsurpassed; featured on the cover of Time, Newsweek, and Sports Illustrated; the only horse listed on ESPN's top fifty athletes of the twentieth century (ahead of Mickey Mantle). His final race at Toronto's Woodbine Racetrack is a touchstone memory for horse lovers everywhere. Yet while Secretariat will be remembered forever, one man, Eddie Shorty Sweat, who was pivotal to the great horse's success, has been all but forgotten---until now. In The Horse God Built, bestselling equestrian writer Lawrence Scanlan has written a tribute to an exceptional man that is also a backroads journey to a corner of the racing world rarely visited. As a young black man growing up in South Carolina, Eddie Sweat struggled at several occupations before settling on the job he was born for---groom to North America's finest racehorses. As Secretariat's groom, loyal friend, and protector, Eddie understood the horse far better than anyone else. A wildly generous man who could read a horse with his eyes, he shared in little of the financial success or glamour of Secretariat's wins on the track, but won the heart of Big Red with his soft words and relentless devotion. In Scanlan's rich narrative, we get a groom's-eye view of the racing world and the vantage of a man who spent every possible moment with the horse he loved, yet who often basked in the horse's glory from the sidelines. More than anything else, The Horse God Built is a moving portrait of the powerful bond between human and horse. The seller was very responsive and answered me on a timely matter. The product itself came in its packaging and was new, not used at all. The packaging was not beat up or anything, safely delivered to my mailbox. No mix ups and zero stress with delivery. The price for the product is completely understandable for the product. I really appreciate the seller and I am very happy to have purchased through this seller. Completely trustable!

Seller handles a massive inventory so I give them grace on the slow processing and shipping. They were very communicative and prompt with their response when I messaged in asking about it. Book was in good condition as described. Small ding on the page edges which wasn't mentioned, but that's fairly common even at your typical book store. Still a good value and I'd buy from them again.

    • Perfect title with reverence for an amazing nonhuman being

I am an equine veterinarian and horse lover all my life, and used to have a Secretariat grandson. This book put much emphasis on the true horse-people relationship that is the basis of the best horsemanship and the humane treatment of these amazing creations that is the basis of attaining best performance. It was also fun to learn about Secretariat's little personality quirks and behaviors. My Sec grandson inherited a lot of his kindness, sense of mischief and personal dignity and self-confidence. Now I know where that came from--he was almost a person in a furry suit. The author's personal and for him, unexpected journey toward realization of the absolute love possible between our two species was something I occasionally see occur in my most observant and intuitive clients, and it is ...

    • interesting but not the story I expected

The story was not what I expected - I didnt realize that the book was written after the death of Eddie Sweat when I bought it, How can you write about the relationship between a specific horse and his specific groom if you cant even interview the groom? The author spoke to other grooms, Secretariat's exercise riders, Eddie"s family, and many other people in the horse world. For this reason I did enjoy the material and the insights provided, and ultimately I enjoyed the book (although I feel it was strewn together rather haphazardly). Just dont expect the personal story of Secretariat and Eddie Sweat

    • Great Read!

Very compelling book about the relationship between Secretariat and Eddie Sweat, the groom who took care of him and loved him. If you think you know the whole Secretariat story, you don't. unless you have read this book. The author writes in such a way that it is hard to put down.
