Reviews'The book ends with an 'Afterword', for which the stated aim of this collection is to open up research opportunities. Given the level of diversity, source interrogation, and depth of writing that has gone into each and every one of these chapters, this impressive publication clearly responds to that challenge and is highly recommended reading.' SynopsisBy European standards, the left in Ireland has not been successful historically, yet its failure has concealed considerable achievement in the occasional great popular mobilisations of the past two centuries. In the process, virtually every shade of radical thought has found expression in Ireland at some point or other, and the country has produced a diverse and colourful range of social rebels. Studies in Irish radical leadership, an edited collection of nineteen biographies of labour leaders and radical activists, examines a sample of the men and women who made that history of protest. Looking over the shoulders of Connolly and Larkin, it provides fascinating insights into the careers and mentalities of Irish labour's second-string leaders. It ranges from the primitive rebels of the early nineteenth century to the parliamentarians of the late twentieth, and asks what kind of people they were, what motivated them, and what is leadership?, This study deals with key leaders in Irish radical history, both male and female. With the left attracting more support in the 2011 election than ever before and with the centenary of several key events in Irish left wing history upon us, this crucial study takes a historical look at Irish radical and left wing leadership. -- ., Studies in Irish radical leadership is a collection of biographies of labour leaders and radical activists. The book aims to discuss the lives of the less well-known men and women of the left; to explore alternative approaches to history; to put radicals in their social context; and to study the meaning of leadership. Looking beyond a field dominated by Connolly and Larkin, the book takes second string personalities out from under the shadows of the giants. The subjects have been selected to be emblematic of phases and strands in labour history and representative of the variety of characters and mentalities on the left. Together they form a collection of windows on all aspects of the trade union and socialist movement in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries and an exploration of many varieties of radical life, alternative thinking and progressive action in Ireland since c.1800. Each chapter provides a concise biography and assesses its subject as an example of his or her type, be it primitive rebel, early socialist, pioneering trade unionist, communist, child of the revolution, maverick, artist, parliamentarian or party leader. Some are household names, yet understudied, more are being considered in print for the first time. This book will be of value to all those with an interest in Labour history, Irish studies, and biography and will appeal to academics, students, trade unionists and social activists., By European standards, the left in Ireland has not been successful historically, yet its failure has concealed considerable achievement in the occasional great popular mobilisations of the past two centuries.
