1 Ezr is an alternate version of the Book of Ezra-Nehemiah in the Septuagint that enjoys canonical status in most eastern churches although it is presented as part of the Apocrypha in the Vulgate and the King James versions of the Bible. This commentary is the first in the German language in decades, which is based on the critical text of the Gottingen Septuagint. 1 Ezra here is understood here neither as nothing more than a fragment of a chroniclers history nor as a mere compilation, but as a coherent narrative whose interpretation as a work of literature and, in consideration of the reconstruction of the development of the text, presents the historical context of the (Persian) period as well as the (Hasmonean) period in which the text was composed. Currently 1 Ezra is receiving a great deal of attention in biblical scholarship. The relationship of 1 Ezra to Ezra-Nehemiah is considered a primary example of development within the literary history of Israel. Dieser Kommentar ist seit Jahrzehnten der erste in deutscher Sprache, und uberhaupt der erste, der den kritischen Text der Gottinger Septuaginta-Ausgabe zugrundelegt. 1 Esdr wird hier nicht mehr als Fragment des Chronistischen Geschichtswerks noch als blosse Kompilation verstanden, sondern als koharente Erzahlung.
