Synopsis
1. Introduction: How did I get here? 2. Antidepressants in clinical practice 3. Medico-cultural context a. Evidence-based medicine b. Medicalisation and pharmaceuticalisation 4. Flaws in antidepressant research a. Selective reporting and spin b. Methodological bias 5. Conflicts of interest in psychiatry a. Denial and minimization of harm b. Corporate bias 6. Solutions for reform, This book addresses the over-prescribing of antidepressants in people with mostly mild and subthreshold depression. It outlines the steep increase in antidepressant prescription and critically examines the current scientific evidence on the efficacy and safety of antidepressants in depression. The book is not only concerned with the conflicting views as to whether antidepressants are useful or ineffective in various forms of depression, but also aims at detailing how flaws in the conduct and reporting of antidepressant trials have led to an overestimation of benefits and underestimation of harms. The transformation of the diagnostic concept of depression from a rare but serious disorder to an over-inclusive, highly prevalent but predominantly mild and self-limiting disorder is central to the books argument. It maintains that biological reductionism in psychiatry and pharmaceutical marketing reframed depression as a brain disorder, corroborating the overemphasis on drug treatment in both research and practice. Finally, the author goes on to explore how pharmaceutical companies have distorted the scientific literature on the efficacy and safety of antidepressants and how patient advocacy groups, leading academics, and medical organisations with pervasive financial ties to the industry helped to promote systematically biased benefit-harm evaluations, affecting public attitudes towards antidepressants as well as medical education, training, and practice.

- r***r (2944)- Bewertung vom Käufer.Letzte 6 MonateBestätigter KaufBook arrived today, 2 days before deadline given by the seller. Well-packaged & in good condition. Price was very competitive, & the book was accurately listed. Great communication. I appreciate the seller getting back to me when I was having trouble tracking the book's delivery progress. Apparently there were 2 different tracking numbers - one in Canada & the other in the U.S., since it was initially shipped from Canada. Thank you very much for your quick response & helpful information.
- i***6 (39)- Bewertung vom Käufer.Letzte 6 MonateBestätigter KaufAs far as the item goes it was everything I was expecting and way better than I hoped for! Their packing was perfect and the item arrived unscathed. They sold for a very fair price when it comes to diecast. The seller description is a bit misleading when you’re waiting for tracking numbers, but their customer service communication is stellar!Pink Slips - 1:18 Porsche 953 K3 (Suzuka 1000km 1981) Diecast Vehicle (Nr. 365372019640)
