Alone, scared, and with so many loved ones already lost to the Nazis, these young women were privately determined to hold on to all they had left: their lives, and those of their unborn babies. That the gas chambers ran out of Zyklon-B just after the babies were born, before they and their mothers could be exterminated, is just one of several miracles that allowed them all to survive and rebuild their lives after World War II. Born Survivors follows the mothers' incredible journey - first to Auschwitz, where they each came under the murderous scrutiny of Dr. Josef Mengele; then to a German slave labour camp where, half-starved and almost worked to death, they struggled to conceal their condition; and finally, as the Allies closed in, their hellish 17-day train journey with thousands of other prisoners to the Mauthausen death camp in Austria. Hundreds died along the way but the courage and kindness of strangers, including guards and civilians, helped save these women and their children. Sixty-five years later, the three 'miracle babies' met for the first time at Mauthausen for the anniversary of the liberation that ultimately saved them.     The horrors of Nazi regime bought to life

    All the horrors of the Nazi extermination regime are brought to life in this remarkable book. Wendy Holden certainly did her homework, for beside interviewing the three children and one of the women who survived the holocaust, she added so many lesser known facts about this sickening period in world history. Having personally talked to Eve Collins (one of the three babies born in a concentration camp) following a talk she gave to members of the Bedford U3A, Born Survivors makes their story and unlikely outcome even more remarkable.

    Didnt enjoy

    The books text was a little to small for me, i felt like there was loads of writing on each page and also didnt like how the author used alot of had words and meaning instead of using everyday launguage we all understand others may like it though

    Not to be missed

    Having been to Auschwitz myself & seen the conditions, how these 3 women & their babies survived was a true miracle. Totally awe inspiring read

    Incredible

    Loved this story I've read it 3 times. Although it jumps between characters i didn't have any problems following their individual stories. The best Holocaust survivors story I've read.

    Good book wrong cover

    This was a good price for the book but unfortunately it came with another book cover (a novel by Katy fforde) so I wasn’t sure it was the right book at first!
