"Filled . . . with all the rich nuances of the Caribbean, creating a convincing backdrop that allows even the most sedentary armchair traveler to visualize each tale's progression. . . . well worth the effort."  - Publishers Weekly on Ballad for the New World and Other Stories, What a powerful writer he is - unfashionably leisured and completely self-confident. Synopsis
Trinidad, 1865. Michel Jean Cazabon returns home to be at his beloved mother's deathbed. Life on the island seems very different after the freedoms of post-Revolutionary Paris, where his paintings have hung in the Louvre. Despite the Emancipation Act, his childhood home is in the grip of colonial power, its people riven by the legacy of slavery. Michel Jean finds himself caught between the powerful and the dispossessed. As an artist, he enjoys the governor's patronage, painting for him the island's vistas and its women; as a Trinidadian he shares easy wisdom and nips of rum with the local boat-builders. But domestic tensions and haunting reminders of the past threaten his equanimity. His fiery half-sister, Josie - the daughter of a slave - still provokes in him a youthful passion; his flirtatious muse, Augusta, tempts him as he paints her 'for posterity'. Meanwhile, letters from his white, French wife and children remind him of their imminent arrival on the island. Caught in the sweep of history and his own intimate dramas, Michel Jean paints the figures in the landscape, the dappled light as it falls through the bamboo grove., After a nineteenth-century gentleman's education in Europe, landscape artist Michel Jean Cazabon returns home to Trinidad just after the island's slaves have been emancipated. The artist, used to life in post-revolutionary Paris, struggles to try to find a place for himself in the island community still in the grip of colonial powers. In order to survive as an artist, Michel takes on commissions from the old guard. But as he appreciates the beauty of his subjects under the dappled light of the bamboo, his sensuous desires and chequered past rise up and threaten to ruin him., After a gentleman's education in Europe, landscape artist Michael Jean Cazabon returns home to Trinidad in 1848 and discovers the changes to his island since the emancipation of the slaves. While his career may prosper, Cazabon is more worried about his white wife's reaction to his family secrets of a mixed heritage.

1st edition, 2nd impression edition of "The Drunken Forest," by Gerald Durrell is as pictured & described. Arrived quickly & safely! Got a great deal on it! Great communication! The book, with a protective mylar cover, was wrapped in bubble wrap, then wrapped in sturdy cardboard, then placed in a rugged bubble mailer! Fort Knox in a mailer! So hard to get an early edition of this classic! So happy to add to my growing collection of nature & science books! Thank you! !!Seller Highly Recommended!!

This delivery was earliest date! Condition, value, quality - all as described. (My mistake was not requiring the publishing date to be 1958. This was 1977.) This IS a Viking Portable Library copy of Dante's Divine Comedy in English, translated by Laurence Binyon, but it is with a cover DIFFERENT from what was shown. The tracking number was listed as from "UPS", but should have been listed as from "USPS." Contact with this seller alleviated tracking issues. I recommend this seller! Thank you!
