Directed by Anthony Minghella (THE ENGLISH PATIENT), this Civil War saga addresses romance, friendship, and the ravages of war--both in the field and on the home front. Far more than a simple love story, Minghella's film captures the horrors of war for both those fighting it, and for those left behind. Based on the Charles Frazier novel, this is a tale of hope, longing, redemption, second chances, and faith.Ada Monroe (Nicole Kidman) is a proper lady who accompanies her preacher father (Donald Sutherland) to Cold Mountain, North Carolina. She waits for her love, W.P. Inman (Jude Law)--a sensitive man with little use for many words--to return from war. In the process she learns basic survival skills and finds strength from no-nonsense Ruby (Ren�e Zellweger), a spitfire who can work the land as well as any man. Meanwhile, wounded Inman has had enough of war and killing, and is slowly working his way back to Ada despite the perils of being a Confederate deserter. Law and Kidman are genuinely touching as two virtual strangers who invest all of their faith in each other, and Zellweger is astounding as the uncultured but compassionate Ruby. Rounding out the cast is an impressive array of actors, including Brendan Gleeson, Ray Winstone, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Natalie Portman, Jack White (of the White Stripes), Kathy Baker, Giovanni Ribisi, and many others.

Although I've been a Rush fan since 1977, somehow I never bought a copy of Exit Stage Left. I was happy to find an original copy having the custom labels in very good plus condition. The upper front edge of the cover is a bit banged up, but a photo in the description disclosed that, and I can live with it. The LP was packaged securely and was shipped promptly. A very positive transaction!

Not a happy movie, but true to the period
The closing days of the Civil War were not a good time for Confederate soldiers. If they were paid it was in worthless money. They generally had no food or transportation home (most often not even a poor-condition horse), had no shelter other than what they could find or make themselves, and little hope that things would be much better when (or if) they got home. Conditions for the people back home were pretty bleak too. With most of the men off to war, women were trying hard to take care of themselves, often with little or no experience in how to grow crops, care for their animals, or use and repair the equipment and tools needed. Many of the men who stayed behind took greedy (and often lusty) advantage of the situation. This is the setting for Cold Mountain. Life during the civil war.
This film was very well done, well written, we'll cast and acted. Probably an accurate portrayal of life during the Civil was in the U.S. It was depressing though. Natalie Portman's part in it was very short and sad. The whole story is sad, there's nothing uplifting about it. I don't recommend it as a feel good movie, it is such a downer. The civil war was such a horrible, terrible time. If you want to get a feeling of what that was like, then this film is for you.This film was very well done, well written, we'll cast and acted. For lovers of Epic films
Another epic movie to own. 2 disc set. Edge of your seat story line. Will be one I watch more than twice. One of the original Renee Zellwigger's best works.

Great movie to add to my collection. Two disc dvd set at an awesome price. This movie has so many of my favorite actors!

Just couldn't get into it.
This version leaves much to be desired. The story bounced around like a superball in a small room. The video was "hazy" from beginning and the sound track was very poor. Sorry folks...this flick might have won an award, but it must have been a down year for movies....I can't recommend this one.
